NBC News poll shows just 17% of Americans pin Jan 6 squarely on Trump

There’s little question that Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and her Democratic caucus have slow-rolled their politically motivated Jan. 6 select committee efforts to have maximum impact on the upcoming midterm elections, but it looks as if playing a game of time may have backfired.

A new poll from NBC News shows that just 17 percent of Americans now believe Donald Trump was “solely” responsible for the Jan. 6 protest at the U.S. Capitol that got out of hand. The poll was conducted May 5 – May 7 and May 9 – May 10 with 1,000 adults, and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.38 percentage points.

Of course, this is not how the network showcased the polling results, as seen here:

Just 45 percent of Americans say Donald Trump is “solely” or “mainly” responsible for the rioters who overtook the U.S. Capitol during the Jan. 6 attack, versus a combined 55 percent who say the former president is only somewhat responsible or not really responsible, according to results from the latest NBC News poll.

That’s a shift from the Jan. 2021 NBC poll — taken days after the attack — when 52 percent said Trump was either solely or mainly responsible, compared with 47 percent who disagreed.

A further breakdown of the findings shows that of the 45 percent who said Trump was “solely” or “mainly” responsible, only 17 percent said “solely.” What’s more, the highest response reflected in the poll was 35 percent of respondents saying the former president is “not really responsible.”

To its credit, NBC News did conclude from the poll that “time has been on Trump’s side.”

The network unwittingly betrayed the purpose of Thursday’s primetime Jan. 6 select committee dog and pony show, where Democrats and two “Pelosi Republicans” — U.S. Reps. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., and Adam Kinzinger, R-Ill. — will showcase their endeavors.

“The question is whether the upcoming hearings can return public opinion to where it was in early 2021. Or close to it,” NBC News inquired.

As noted by the Daily Mail, in January 2021, 52 percent said Trump was solely or mainly responsible for the protest, with 28 percent saying he was “solely” responsible and 24 percent saying he was “mainly” responsible.

While the liberal media may be giddy over the coming show trial, it seems most Americans have moved on, though Democrats could sorely use a distraction with inflation and record-high gas prices rocking American families to the core, along with a critical baby formula crisis and yet another major surge of illegal immigrants expected at the southern border any day now.

Fox News, which dominates the cable news ratings, announced that it will not carry the primetime hearings live– much to the chagrin of CNN’s Brian Stelter — opting to go with its usual lineup instead.
