Newsbusters managing editor Curtis Houck posted a curious clip on Twitter that sparked much debate about the wisdom of having children wear N95 masks.
In the video, NBC News Investigative & Consumer Correspondent Vicky Nguyen can be seen donning an N95 respirator mask, explaining that they are “very snug” despite not being “the most comfortable” and that when wearing one “not a lot of air is getting in.”
The segment continues, administering advice for how to mask your children including how to layer surgical masks with cloth masks, and how the “best mask” is the one the child is willing to keep on, even if it doesn’t work the best to filter out COVID-19.
NBC's Today show does a segment about getting kids to wear KN95, N95, and surgical masks wherever they go *plus* how N95s are great because they "very snug" and there's not a lot of air…getting in," so you can't breathe in air, meaning you're keeping Covid away or something pic.twitter.com/aAql5UGUgh

The subject of masking children is a sore spot with many parents, and the idea of encouraging kids to wear masks that don’t allow a lot of air in has sent many into a rage:
Nah dying of asphyxia is better then getting a virus that is of very low risk to kids. And these people want us to believe they care about kids?

I caught that. A lot of children with asthma won’t be getting a lot of air in. No one will notice a suffering child because you won’t see his face. A lot of sad children are not being cared for because you can NOT SEE their faces!

Thank you for sharing that video. I’ve never seen a more “I’m stuck in a New York bubble” segment in my life.

According to MSM, it appears that you don’t need to breath air!!! But you better shut up because they will claim “science”!

However, those on the other side of the debate suggest that Houck was misconstruing Nguyen’s words and that actually, not letting a lot of air in around the filter is the entire point of that type of mask. One comment even caught Nguyen’s attention and prompted a response:
Thanks @johnwcbragg! Breathing air filtered through the mask to reduce risk of contracting COVID. Appreciate your understanding we aren’t telling people not to breathe.

Nope. Not about wearing masks everywhere. Just indoors in public spaces or outdoor crowded spaces if you want to reduce COVID risk. And the point of a mask is not to suffocate (ask doctors & nurses who wear them all day and live) but to filter out particles that can make u sick.

Yes, it’s called a good seal. Snorkel much? Want water leaking into your mask or not?

We’re still going with the narrative that the style of masks that have been used professionally for decades in all sorts of trades and medical setting are somehow *suffocating people to death*?

I wear N95s. Yes you can breathe through them believe it or not.
