Neil Cavuto smacks down Biden economic adviser’s desperate spin: ‘That’s just factually wrong’

Fox News anchor Neil Cavuto threw down with White House economic adviser Jared Bernstein following President Biden’s State of the Union address on Tuesday, pointing out the false claim that he created 12 million new jobs since he took office.

Cavuto opened up by waving Biden’s low approval ratings in front of Bernstein’s nose, especially when it comes to handling the economy. A Fox News poll shows that 61% of Americans disapprove of the president’s actions concerning the economy.

It should also be noted that a recent poll that was conducted by ABC News/The Washington Post found four in 10 Americans claim their financial situation has gotten worse under Biden. Forty-one percent of those polled said they are financially worse off now than they were before he took office. The poll also found that approximately six in 10 Democrats do not want Biden to win the presidential nomination.

The backdrop for [the State of the Union] are these polls that seem to show most Americans don’t agree the economy is doing as well as you say, and some of the numbers do validate,” Cavuto informed Bernstein. “What do you think’s going on?”

“I think there’s lots of different polls you could pull from,” he glibly responded. “I think the numbers that we think are most important to characterizing this economy from the perspective of working families is how they’re doing. They’ve got real wage gains up over the past seven months, 12.1 million jobs since this president got here, a manufacturing boom, 800,000 jobs since Biden took office in manufacturing.”

Bernstein then trotted out the leftist talking point that the unemployment rate is 3.4%, the purported lowest in more than 50 years. What he didn’t say is that number is massively skewed by the pandemic.

“You mentioned the 12 million new jobs when in fact, the Department of Labor statistics say that those were actually added back-jobs, the jobs that were taken away during COVID…” Cavuto commented.

“Yeah, that’s factually wrong,” Bernstein insisted.

Cavuto wasn’t buying the premise and dug in.

“Let me pursue it. The jobs actually created were more like 2.7 million. And the same comes to manufacturing jobs when you talk about three-quarters of a million more of them added on. A lot of them are just jobs that came back from what we had now that your gain is smaller than that. A job gain is a job gain…” Cavuto pressed.

There was a bunch of crosstalk that followed. The gist of the back and forth had to do with the White House inflating job numbers.

“No. So, I’m just not gonna let you blow fog over what is clearly an absolutely stellar economic record, especially in the labor market,” Bernstein managed to interject.

“But are the new jobs…” Cavuto started.

More crosstalk ensued but the Fox News host was unrelenting.

“But they’re jobs that we had before that we got back post-COVID, right?” he asked Bernstein.

“Hold on, let me respond, ok? That way we can have a much better dialogue – 3.4% unemployment. That’s the lowest in 53 years. It’s lower than expectations were for this time of year based on forecasts that were me by [the Congressional Budget Office]. So, that’s responsive to your question. We are outperforming where people thought the economy would be. If you look at the long-term job gains over this expansion, we’ve surpassed our pre-pandemic level way before almost any other business cycle on record, at least going back to the 1950s,” Bernstein said, spewing economic propaganda expertly.

“You just don’t post those kinds of economic records unless your economy is doing something very right,” he asserted, doubling down on his claims. “I’m just not going to let you throw a fog of numbers out here to undermine that.”

The verbal battle continued before the segment came to a grinding halt.

“We got through that fog just nicely,” Cavuto quipped.
