New nonprofit counters ‘Abolish ICE’ movement: ‘Our borders are wide open, and the entire world knows it’

A new nonprofit launched on Monday “to advocate for the proper enforcement of immigration laws in the interior of the United States – a practice that is critical to national security, public safety, and the rule of law.”

The National Immigration Center for Enforcement – or NICE – claims the Biden administration “has directed the very agency in charge of enforcing our immigration laws to willfully violate them” and aims to “provide ICE with the tools and directives to appropriately and effectively do its job.”

“Our borders are wide open, and the entire world knows it,” NICE states on its website. “If you cross illegally, you’ll likely get to stay — regardless of intent, criminal history or eligibility. This is a direct result of U.S. Immigration Customs and Enforcement (ICE) agents being directed by political interests to catch and release illegal aliens, rather than apprehend, track, detain, and remove them in an expeditious manner.”

The organization is led by President RJ Hauman, “an immigration enforcement expert with over a decade of experience in Washington covering the issue.”

“The Biden administration has directed the very agency in charge of enforcing our immigration laws to willfully violate them,” Hauman told Fox News Digital in a statement. “This has triggered a historic border crisis while inflicting immeasurable harm on the American people, our communities, and the very fabric of our nation,”

“When fully operational and acting in accordance with Federal law, ICE makes America safer and more secure,” he continued. “Instead, political forces here in Washington have hijacked ICE and continue to prevent its brave men and women from enforcing our laws and defending our country – precisely what the agency was created to do.”

Last year, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas bragged that his agency had “fundamentally changed immigration enforcement in the interior,” Fox News Digital reports.

“For the first time ever, our policy explicitly states that a non-citizen’s unlawful presence in the United States will not, by itself, be a basis for the initiation of an enforcement action,” Mayorkas said.

According to Fox News:

The administration’s moves have coincided with a sharp decrease in deportations. The agency removed 72,177 illegal immigrants in FY 2022 and 59,011 in FY 2021. Those numbers marked a sharp drop from the 185,884 deported in FY 20 (the last full fiscal year of the Trump administration) and 267,258 in FY 2019. That drop also came as the Abolish ICE movement has continued to gain steam among Democrats in Congress.

As BizPac Review reported in February, dozens of Democratic lawmakers — including Reps. Pramila Jayapal of Washington, Jerrold Nadler of New York, Nanette Diaz Barragán of California, and 33 other Democratic members of Congress — pushed to increase funding for an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) program led by a group that advocated to abolish the agency.

“With over a million illegal aliens with final orders for removal, the Biden Administration is refusing to deport them, a blatant disregard for the rule of law,” NICE states on its website. “The Biden Administration has failed to discharge this basic sovereign responsibility.”

The group says, “Every illegal alien should be subject to removal or criminal prosecution, as prescribed by law.”

“And certainly, any alien who has been arrested and convicted of a crime should be removed from the country, rather than released into American communities,” it adds.

NICE calls for an end to the Biden administration’s practice of “catch-and-release.”

“Rather than detain illegal aliens as the law requires, the Biden Administration appears intent on releasing as many of them as possible into the country without any expectation that they will comply with our immigration laws,” the group alleges. “This leaves American communities vulnerable to dangerous, criminal aliens who are more than happy to violate our immigration laws and commit heinous crimes.”

NICE’S advisory board is comprised of several former DHS officials, including former acting U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Director Joseph Edlow, retired ICE Field Office Director John Fabbricatore, former DHS Office of General Counsel official Mike Howell, and Chris Russo, president of Texans for Strong Borders.

According to Edlow, the media often fails to cover issues related to ICE and interior enforcement.

“While border security is critical, we can no longer afford to ignore larger immigration enforcement issues,” he told Fox News Digital. “The first 48 hours of a border encounter transforms into years of unlawful presence, court delays and unexecuted removal orders.”

A former ICE attorney, Edlow called for a “return to the integrity of the laws and push back against the vilification of ICE’s mission and its agents.”

“NICE will add a narrative to the immigration debate that is largely ignored,” he said, “and will seek to ensure that the American people can rely on justice, protection and fairness in the immigration system.”

In addition to wanting an end to catch-and-release, NICE wants to do away with “illegal and unconstitutional sanctuary city policies.”

The group argues they “undermine the rule of law and prevent local, state and federal law enforcement agencies from working in conjunction with each other as they should to keep our communities safe.”

They are also in favor of “requiring all employers to use E-Verify and make it clear that those who hire illegal aliens will be held accountable for their violations through both civil and criminal penalties” and expanding “ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO), through more agents, detention bedspace, GPS tracking, criminal investigations, and drug trafficking mitigation efforts.”

“With what is happening at the border and gutting of enforcement in the interior of the country, it is time to strengthen our resolve and enforce the law as it is written,” Fabbricatore said. “The citizens of this country deserve it and the lingering excuses for inaction are no longer acceptable.”
