California Governor Gavin Newsom is not stopping at making “materially deceptive content” illegal in his state.
On Tuesday, Newsom bragged about retaliating against X owner Elon Musk for sharing an altered campaign ad from Vice President Kamala Harris. The comments on the post were nothing short of hilarious, with equal parts mocking and education on free speech and parodies.
I just signed a bill to make this illegal in the state of California.
You can no longer knowingly distribute an ad or other election communications that contain materially deceptive content — including deepfakes. https://t.co/VU4b8RBf6N

Newsom mentioned the law again a few days later, indicating that he is proud of it and believes it will be upheld in court when it is inevitably challenged. He also implies that he hasn’t ruled out the possibility of dragging Musk into court.

“Mr. Musk has missed the punchline,” Newsom said. “Parody is still alive and well in California, but deep-fakes and manipulations of elections that hurts democracy and integrity of the system and trust – we believe in truth and trust – and we think this law is sound and will be upheld in courts.”
“Sir, do you intend to seek legal action, whether on Elon Musk or other proliferators of-” a reporter tried to ask before Newsom interrupted.
“Well the law asserts that many can seek injunctive relief, and I just signed the law, I just signed 32 other bills on housing and I haven’t had a chance to review this specific lawsuit around a conservative blogger that seems offended by our law,” the governor said, making sure to get his shots in.
X users weighed in on the potential fight brewing:
Gavin Newsom threatening Elon Musk is exactly what Musk wants.
He wants to take this free speech issue to court so SCOTUS can put Newsom in his place.
