Newsom’s proposed 28th Amendment gun grab scheme draws heated response

California Governor Gavin Newsom rolled out a new tactic in the left’s war on law-abiding gun ownership as efforts to disarm Americans have continued to meet resistance in legislatures and in the courts, unveiling his proposal for a new constitutional amendment that if successful, could be the proverbial camel’s nose under the tent for the widespread firearm confiscation that is the Democratic Party’s Holy Grail.

On Thursday, the far-left Democrat called for the passage of the 28th Amendment in a blatant move to circumvent the 2nd Amendment. And in an even more radical move, he is pushing for a constitutional convention to get the job done, a dramatic escalation from an ambitious man who would impose the extremist “values” of his home state upon the rest of the nation.

“Our ability to make a more perfect union is literally written into the Constitution,” Newsom said in a statement posted to the governor’s website. “So today, I’m proposing the 28th Amendment to the United States Constitution to do just that. The 28th Amendment will enshrine in the Constitution common sense gun safety measures that Democrats, Republicans, Independents, and gun owners overwhelmingly support – while leaving the 2nd Amendment unchanged and respecting America’s gun-owning tradition.”

“I’m proposing the 28th Amendment to the United States Constitution to help end our nation’s gun violence crisis,” tweeted Newsom along with a video of himself touting the bold move. “The American people are sick of Congress’ inaction.”

His proposed amendment will have four initial features: raising the minimum gun purchase age to 21, implementing universal background checks, setting a “reasonable waiting period for gun purchases” and banning civilians from purchasing “assault weapons,” presumably also making them illegal, a measure that has been intensely pushed by the Biden regime, congressional Democrats and a web of anti-Second Amendment activist groups.

“Why now is pretty self-evident,” Newsom told NBC News. “A lot of the laws we’ve passed are being rolled back by the federal courts.”

Denying that he was eyeing the abolition of the Second Amendment, Newsom added, “This is an existential crisis that we’re experiencing…”

“Gavin Newsom’s latest publicly stunt once again shows that his unhinged contempt for the right to self-defense has no bounds,” the National Rifle Association (NRA) tweeted in response to Newsom.”California is a beacon for violence because of Newsom’s embrace of policies that champion the criminal and penalize the law-abiding. That is why the majority of Americans rightfully reject his California-style gun control.”

Twitter users unloaded on the Golden State gun grabber with both barrels.

But others were much impressed with the Sacramento slickster’s authoritarian gambit, including Luke Skywalker actor and other celebrity and Hollywood types who don’t live by the same rules as the little people, especially when it comes to surrendering their heavily-armed security details.

“Passage of the 28th Amendment will require a convention to propose amendments to the United States Constitution, also known as an Article V Convention or amendatory convention. Working in partnership with members of the California State Senate and Assembly, California will be the first state in the nation to call for such a convention with a joint resolution being introduced by California State Senator Aisha Wahab and Assemblymember Reggie Jones-Sawyer,” the governor’s statement reads.

“The Governor will work with grassroots supporters, elected and civic leaders, and broad and diverse coalitions across the nation to fight for the passage of similar resolutions in other state legislatures to ensure the convening of a constitutional convention limited to this subject. 33 other states, in addition to California, would need to take action to convene such a convention,” according to the statement, meaning that at least 18 states would need to stand firm in their opposition to such a backdoor gun grab that circumvents Congress and the courts.

“A man of action, Governor Gavin Newsom has the backbone to actually do something about the gun fetish culture around weapons of war, and tackle the relentless problem of gun violence and mass shootings,” California State Senator Aisha Wahab said. “As someone impacted by gun violence, I have an obligation to elevate the voices of victims and those of us left behind in the wake of tragedy.”

More worrisome is that Newsom may have let the cat out of the bag that a constitutional convention is an avenue that Democrats are eyeing as a way to completely gut and overhaul the U.S. Constitution, a document that they have shown that they have little use for in its current incarnation.
