Nicki Minaj for White House press secretary? Gavin Newsom jumps into the bizarre rumor mill

California Governor Gavin Newsom is among those reacting to the idea that rapper Nicki Minaj could be the next White House press secretary.

On Sunday, White House Director of Communications Steven Cheung posted a video of himself with Onika Tanya Maraj-Petty, better known by her stage name “Nicki Minaj.” In the clip, the songstress was praising President Donald Trump for his business knowledge and work ethic.

The White House press secretary position has been effectively vacant since the resignation of Karoline Leavitt. Katie Zacharia filled the role for just five days, and speculation on who would be next has run rampant since her speedy departure.

Upon hearing the rumor, Newsom’s office responded, “We can only pray.”

Minaj has had issues with Newsom before, claiming that he “completely ignored” her while she dealt with swatting in 2022-2023. She claims that she had reached out on social media and through his aides as her Beverly Hills mansion was repeatedly targeted, but did not hear back.

“He just completely ignored me, with all the money I spent in taxes,” she told Time in May.

She was surprised after another incident in 2025, when Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, R-Fla., reached out to her to connect her to a private security firm and even federal law enforcement.

“I was shocked. I’d never seen anyone in politics treat me that way,” Minaj said, saying the gesture influenced her to take her love of the president public. “That’s what made me say that I don’t care to keep this a secret anymore.”
