NY Dems propose bill to fund abortions for all, including out-of-state residents and illegal immigrants

A newly proposed bill in New York state further proves that Democrats are not interested in abiding by the Constitution as they seek to circumvent a potential ruling on Roe v. Wade that would fund abortions for out-of-state residents and illegal immigrants.

Since the leak of Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito’s draft majority opinion on Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, Democrats and their activist cohorts have taken action on all fronts to oppose the likely outcome that Roe v. Wade will be overturned and the ability to make laws regarding abortion will be returned to the states. In addition to protests at the homes of Justices and churches, calls to pack the Supreme Court, and proposed procedural changes in the Senate to eliminate the filibuster, they are now drafting legislation to make New York state a taxpayer-funded tourist destination for abortion-on-demand.

The bill co-sponsored by state Sen. Cordell Cleare (D-Harlem) and Assemblywoman Assemblywoman Jessica González-Rojas (D-Queens) notes that if Roe v. Wade is overturned “36,000,000 women and individuals with the capacity to become pregnant” will lose access to care. As such, they deem it imperative to create the “Reproductive Freedom and Equity Program” to “provide funding to abortion providers and non-profit organizations whose primary function is to facilitate access to abortion care.”

“It’s crucial in the pursuit for reproductive justice. It is about health. It is about dignity. And it is about justice,” González-Rojas said in introducing the bill. “We’re now facing an even darker reality. The access to Roe may fall before us in June as a leaked memo has presented. So it is up to New York, a state that is rooted in the ability for folks to determine if, when and how to create their families, and to stand proudly by that ability to make those decisions for themselves.

As González-Rojas laid out, this proposal will extend to illegal immigrants as well because, “I’ve seen the repercussions of people in the Rio Grande Vally, I’ve been down there, they’ve crossed borders to get care literally.”

The proposal is fully supported by the state’s Democratic political leaders including Attorney General Letitia James who proudly recounted her own abortion from nearly 20 years ago following the initial SCOTUS leak. Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) was also vocal on the matter tweeting, “In New York, our state has enshrined abortion rights. And we’re pushing to reinforce it with the Reproductive Freedom and Equity Fund in our state put forward by [González-Rojas]. It’d give providers and non-profits funding to increase access to abortion care for all.”

However, voices of reason have spoken out in opposition and pointed to more pressing concerns that the state should be using its resources to alleviate. Assemblyman John Salka (R-Cooperstown) wrote in a text reported by the New York Post, “We have so many of our own citizens that have critical health care needs that we should be focused on. For instance, we are witnessing an explosion of mental health issues, especially in our young people. It’s outrageous. The taxpayers of the state of New York should not be subsidizing the performing of abortions for out-of-state women.”

In fact, Gov. Kathy Hochul (D-NY) has shown little interest in addressing the cause of mental health issues, that many consider her partially responsible for in her perpetuation of pandemic lockdowns and regulations, and instead has focused on coping with the existing problems.

Planned Parenthood Empire State Acts interim president and CEO Georgana Hanson told the Post, “The crux of this legislation is really about shoring up access…It’s just way too soon in the process to try to earmark a specific number or percentage that might be undocumented.”
