The latest example of coddling criminals found a rule change in store for Gotham inmates aligned with the mayor’s perspective that they’re just “New Yorkers in custody.”
No matter the issue, the Overton Window-shifting left has employed a manipulation of language to desensitize and destigmatize even the most deviant behaviors and beliefs. Now the same sloganeers who brought the world “My body my choice,” “Love is love,” and “No person is illegal,” are aiming to soften perspectives at prisons with “person-first terms” like “people in custody.”
According to a report from the New York Post, a proposed rule change for the New York City Board of Correction aims to replace the terms “inmate” and “inmates” with “person in custody” and “people in custody,” respectively.
“The proposed rule change for the Board of Correction swaps the words ‘inmate’ or ‘inmates’ with ‘people in custody’ or ‘person in custody’ more than 300 times,” detailed the newspaper. “Criminal justice advocates claim that ‘inmates’ [is] a derogatory term for incarcerated criminal defendants or convicts.”
Within the text of the proposed rule change, the Board of Correction stated, “In 2021, the Board made a commitment to employ person-first language in its Minimum Standards and communications by deleting references to inmates’ in favor of personfirst terms such as people in custody and using gender inclusive language in Chapter 1 of the Minimum Standards.”
Statewide, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) already approved replacing the word “inmate” with “incarcerated individual” in 2022, remarking at the time, “Individuals impacted by the criminal justice system have long noted that terms such as felon, inmate, prisoner, and convict dehumanize individuals and perpetuate the idea that incarcerated people should be permanently demonized and stigmatized.”
News of the language game being played by leftists comes in the wake of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s (D) latest get-together with criminals housed at Rikers Island for a 2026 FIFA World Cup watch party.
Ensuring that “we can celebrate this moment together,” the Islamunist mayor reportedly brought chicken parmesan and salmon for the inmates to enjoy while watching the semi-final match between Argentina and England, Fox News’ Jesse Watters shared. Mamdani told the press, “The World Cup has been a magical moment for the entire city. These are New Yorkers, and they will be New Yorkers when they get out of Rikers.”

Mamdani previously garnered attention at the jail complex amid a performative Ramadan where the occasion of breaking fast was done with inmates and staff.
“It was a night that will stay with me for quite some time,” Hizzoner said at the time. “People sharing what little they have: breaking bread, offering prayer, making space for one another’s dignity even in the hardest place. In a system too often defined by what it takes, I was reminded of what it means to give–mercy, dignity, and humanity. May we extend that mercy as far as we can. Eid Mubarak to all.”

Meanwhile, Mamdani’s office is working toward completing the shutdown of Rikers Island by 2027 to fulfill the city’s plan of spreading the criminals throughout a network of prisons across the boroughs.
