The Democrat Party has gone so far off the deep end that even Bill Maher is thinking about switching sides for the 2028 election, suggesting that he could cast his vote for Vice President JD Vance.
The old-school liberal HBO host sat down with ABC News reporter Jonathan Karl for an interview that aired on Sunday’s edition of “This Week,” in which, among other things, he expressed his dismay about the cowardice of Democrats over the ascendancy of the far-left democratic socialists who are aggressively making their move to take over the party.

“Their party is being taken over now,” the comic and social commentator told Karl. “Every day I hear about a new very radical guy. I feel very good about like 10 whenever years ago, I did lose fans — because I wasn’t gonna go along with some of this crazy stuff on the left too.”
“I didn’t change really on what I thought about the right. But I can’t sit and just not notice stuff, which people seem to want to do because it’s all about my team or your team. But yeah, there’s some crazy stuff,” Maher explained, adding when Dems are “cheering for the intifada, cut! I’m out.”
“Democrats are cowardly,” he said of the party establishment’s squishiness toward the radicals. “They’re cowardly.”
When asked by the host about remarks that he made during an interview with the vice president on a recent episode of “Real Time With Bill Maher” in which he suggested that he could be open to voting Vance in 2028, Maher indicated that a break with the Democrats could be coming.
“Your vote is up for grabs,” Karl asked.
“Yes,” Maher responded. “My vote is in play. “Because it can’t be Trump running, so I’m not living in communist America.”
The comic also isn’t being fooled by the left’s gaslighting about democratic socialism vs. actual socialism, the precursor for communism.
“I know that the talking point is that it’s not communism, it’s socialism,” Maher said. “OK, I’ve read the quotes from the DSA platform from their own mouths. Don’t tell me I’m not seeing what I am seeing. And DSA, again, they say things like ‘takeover of key industries,’ … That’s communism. You know, there is a definition.”
As one notable authority on the subject – Vladimir I. Lenin – once famously put it: “The goal of socialism is communism.”
“This new wing with all the energy…it’s not just a few people anymore,” Maher told Karl of the socialist insurgency. “Every day I read about a new person in Colorado and Wisconsin, somebody who is saying some variation of… ‘defund the police,’ ‘abolish the police.’
“No prisons, no police. Like, what world do they think we could possibly live in under these conditions?” Maher asked. “It’s just a level of nutty that — I’m so glad that whenever it was, I was like, ‘No, I’m not going along.’”
“I never was a Democrat to begin with,” Maher said on his “Club Random” podcast last year. “I always, like, caucus with the Democrats and I generally vote for them. I think, always vote for them, but I always look at it and like no, I’m gonna actually make up my mind; they just always are less scary and insane than the Republicans, but I wait for the day when it evens out.”
With Trump out due to term limits, Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio are the two GOP frontrunners for the 2028 nomination.
