Omar’s fellow House Dems rally to her defense, decry pre-election ‘weaponization of law enforcement’

Almost 200 House Democrats are demanding that the Trump administration refrain from investigating Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) because they claim that her re-election chances are being harmed.

The Somalia-born lawmaker has drawn the scrutiny of the federal government over whether her U.S. citizenship was obtained through fraud, and her Washington, D.C. home was raided earlier this month by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) agents as part of what the Justice Department said was an “ongoing federal criminal investigation.”

In an October 26 letter to Attorney General Todd Blanche and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Markwayne Mullin, Omar’s colleagues slammed the probe into the ethically-challenged “Squad” member as the “weaponization of law enforcement” to harass a member of Congress weeks before an election.

The Democrats, who are led by House Judiciary Committee ranking member Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) and Seattle socialist Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.), tear into the two top officials over their role in the investigation, demanding that they take no further action before voters go to the polls next Tuesday.

“Congresswoman Omar is seeking reelection in Minnesota’s 5th congressional district in just one week. News of the search warrant, whether properly predicated or not, could affect voters’ decisions, which is exactly why federal law enforcement should not engage in such conduct when voters are casting their ballots. This type of interference strips Minnesotans of their right to a free and fair election guaranteed to them under the Constitution,” the Democrats wrote.

“Your actions are clearly driven by a pre-determined political outcome rather than an objective pursuit of justice,” the Dems continued. “Political attacks should play no role in federal law enforcement, but they have here.”

“We stand with Congresswoman Omar and condemn the weaponization of law enforcement against her. You have already disgraced the offices you hold, and we demand you refrain from taking any further actions that could affect the outcome of the upcoming election,” the letter reads.

In a post to X, Jayapal blasted what she called the pre-midterm “persecution” of Omar as “vile and politically motivated,” and vowed that the Democrats will retaliate if they get control of the House.

“The persecution of @Ilhan just days before an election is vile and politically-motivated,” she wrote. “I’m leading 175 House Democrats in denouncing this. When we retake power, we have to seriously look at how we can stop these abuses of power — starting with the power of the purse.”

Government officials are reportedly looking into whether the congresswoman or her father – a reputed war criminal – misrepresented Omar’s age on the citizenship application to show that she was 17 years old instead of 18.

It would make a big difference because, if teenage Omar was 17 at the time, she would have been granted automatic citizenship with Nur Omar Mohamed. But if Omar was actually 18, she would have needed to become naturalized separately.

If it is proven that she obtained her citizenship fraudulently, Omar could potentially be denaturalized and kicked out of the United States.

“They keep talking about deportation, no, she could go to jail,” President Donald J. Trump said last week, adding, “This is just my opinion — I think she’s a sick, very dishonest person who hates our country, and she comes from a country that essentially is not even a country.”
