One nation under God? Woman’s viral freak out over man approaching her sparks debate

A video has gone viral of a seemingly attractive woman sitting in her car ranting about a man “approaching” her in a parking lot, even though she acknowledges that the man never got closer than 30 feet.

Citing an unnamed book she read, the woman said the encounter “went fine” but left her shaking — she held up her hand for verification.

The woman said a man “approached her” in a parking lot while she was alone, before adding that her son was also with her. She offered few details and it’s not clear where the incident took place, but it is daylight and there are other cars seen in the parking lot. She said the man said to her, from 30 feet away, “Excuse me, miss.”

And that’s all it took before she went on the offensive, explaining that she turned around and yelled, “Do not approach me!”

“Over and over and over,” she added, “I said ‘Do not approach me. Do not!'”

Granted, parking lots can be especially dangerous places for women but she offered nothing to indicate that the man might be a threat to her. In fact, she acknowledged that he immediately yielded when she called out. At the same time, she continued to engage him, treating him as a clear and present danger.

Now she had the advantage of seeing the man and may have had a legitimate reason to react as she did, but she did not articulate that reasoning. For all we know, the man may have wanted to inform her that she dropped something. But he apparently lost his patience with the woman’s aggression, as she said he began cursing and yelling, “What’s your problem?”

Again, she admits that “he didn’t come anywhere near me,” and details the painstaking steps the man took to avoid her as she raged on about telling him not to approach her.

She closes out the clip which has been viewed over 3 million times by telling women to “never” let a man approach them in a parking lot and to use their “strongest voice” to reprimand any man who does.

All the drama calls to mind a recent video from Twitch influencer Jessica Fernandez, who attempted to smear a man who was just trying to help her out at the gym. Fernandez takes time out of an obviously intense workout to complain about “weirdos” and men “staring” at her, and blasting a guy who asked if she needed assistance when seeing her struggling to put weights on a bar.

The video above prompted plenty of discussions online… here’s a quick sampling of some of the responses to the story from Twitter:
