Passengers forced to deplane after two Delta Airlines aircraft collide on taxiway in Atlanta

Passengers are describing their experiences after planes collided on the tarmac at an Atlanta airport as officials are investigating the frightening incident.

Crews directed travelers to safety and awaiting buses at the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport in Georgia after a Delta plane collided with an Endeavor Air flight on the tarmac on Tuesday. Endeavor is a subsidiary of Delta Air Lines.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the wingtip of a Delta Airbus A350 struck the tail of an Endeavor airplane. Delta Air Lines Flight 295 was carrying 221 passengers and was bound for Tokyo, Japan. Endeavor Air Flight 5526, a Bombardier CRJ900 craft, was carrying 56 passengers and headed to Lafayette, Louisiana.

There were no injuries and the FAA as well as the National Transportation Safety Board will reportedly be conducting investigations.

“You know I just noticed that the tail on the RJ is missing,” said an air traffic controller, according to audio archived by LiveATC.net. “So Endeavor 5526, hold your position, and do you require any immediate assistance?”

“No immediate assistance,” the pilot replied. “We’ll need a tow, though.”

Images and videos posted on social media showed passengers being directed to awaiting buses and taken to a “private room,” as documented by KSHB 41 producer Nathan Pike.

“Well that was terrifying,” wrote Jason Adams, a Tampa meteorologist for WTFS TV.

“Very jarring, metal scraping sounds then loud bangs. We’re fine. No fire or smoke. Awaiting @Delta instructions,” he added in a post on X.

“I was on a different Delta plane when our pilot announced that we were going to have a short delay on the ramp,” passenger Greg Vojnovic told Fox News Digital in an email on Wednesday. “The pilot said he wanted to tell us what was [happening] so we wouldn’t be alarmed by seeing emergency vehicles.”

“He said a larger plane clipped the tail of a smaller plane with its wing while taxiing. He wanted us all to know that no one was hurt. I appreciated that Delta wanted their passengers to know what was happening,” he added.

“Following an incident at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport earlier today, Delta worked with each customer from flights DL295 to Tokyo-Haneda and DL5526 to Lafayette, Louisiana, to provide accommodation on alternate aircraft scheduled to depart Tuesday afternoon,” the airline said in a statement.

“We apologize to our customers for the experience. No customer or crew member injuries have been reported, and operations are continuing as normal at the Atlanta airport,” Delta continued. “Meanwhile Delta is cooperating with the NTSB and other authorities while Delta TechOps teams prepare to safely move both aircraft to maintenance hangars.”
