Owning up to maternal mudslinging, a gubernatorial candidate has reportedly committed millions to promote his opponent’s mother’s testimony in a perceived “campaign-ending moment”
In recent days, a campaign advertisement began circulating on social media featuring Donna Arthur, the mother of Ohio Democratic gubernatorial nominee Amy Acton, labeling her daughter a liar in need of help. Tuesday, her Republican rival, entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, admitted responsibility for the ad while allocating $4 million to air it across the Buckeye State in the final two weeks before Election Day.
“It is an ad from our campaign,” Ramaswamy told reporters while his campaign manager Jonathan Ewing remarked to Axios, “This is a campaign-ending moment for Amy Acton. The people who know her best keep warning Ohioans about her.”

Within the minute-long ad, Acton’s estranged mother accuses her daughter of lying about childhood trauma, urging voters against supporting the Democrat.
“She lies about her past. She says she grew up living in a tent. None of that is true. She’s lied her entire life,” asserted Arthur. “My daughter needs help and she can’t help you if she needs help herself.”
BOMBSHELL:
Ohio Democratic gubernatorial candidate Amy Acton’s own mother urges voters not to vote for her daughter.
“My name is Donna Arthur and I’m Amy Acton’s mother. I worked at Children and Family Service Association, building one of the first two sexual abuse programs in America.
I love my daughter, but when I saw her lying about her opponent—and it’s not easy for a mother to say this—but Amy has a serious problem.
She is a liar. She lies about her past. She says she grew up living in a tent. None of that is true. She’s lied her entire life.
My daughter needs help, and she can’t help you if she needs help herself. People can change, but first they have to tell the truth, and my daughter still isn’t doing that.
Don’t vote for people who lie. Don’t let her become your governor. If you think she’ll make your life better, you’re fooling yourself. It will only get worse.”
That’s one hell of an October surprise.

Across social media, the video featured community notes akin to statements released by Acton and her brother, Philip Stearns.
On Facebook, the former Ohio Department of Health director contended that she and her sibling “endured abuse, hunger, and neglect — even spending one winter homeless living in a tent.”
“We were often kept in a dark basement, were frequent-fliers with child protective services, and lived in fear of our birth mother’s violent and erratic temper. Between the ages of 10 and 12, I was sexually abused by her husband, while my birth mother did nothing to protect me,” continued Acton. “I’ve always known that she was deeply sick and unwell, and it’s sad to see Vivek Ramaswamy exploit her all for his own political gain.”
In his own statement, Stearns expressed, “It’s not surprising that Vivek Ramaswamy has stooped to such a despicable low as to attempt to turn the sexual abuse Amy endured at twelve years old from our birth mother’s husband into a political talking point.”
“After he was arrested and Amy and I were removed from their custody, our birth mother stayed married to Amy’s rapist until he died. This desperate, disgusting attack reveals exactly who Vivek Ramaswamy is at his core — a pathetic excuse for a man who is willing to hurt anyone as long as it gets him what he wants,” added the brother.

While Acton’s statement demonized her mother, it’s worth highlighting that details about the alleged abuser specified he was “arrested, charged with rape, and indicted by a grand jury.” There was no mention of a conviction.
Meanwhile, reactions to the advertisement have been split on social media beyond the normal partisanship.
@ReasonedVoice74 @ErikaCA47 @VivekGRamaswamy It needs to get so much more press. Really hoping they run the ad.

It’s seems crazy to me one would assume this would work and not backfire. An estranged mom from a rough childhood going straight to camera to trash her daughter as a trustworthy messenger?
