Redistricting battle in Virginia has Soros-affiliated dark money flowing through the state like poison

A pivotal redistricting battle in Virginia has Soros-affiliated dark money flowing through the state like poison in the state’s political bloodstream.

Right now, the state’s 11 House seats are held by six Democrats and five Republicans, but state Democrats want to redraw the state’s maps so that they gain an advantage in 10 of the 11 districts.

For them to redraw the map, however, state residents must approve a proposed redistricting referendum that’s up for a vote on Tuesday.

Republicans strongly oppose the referendum and have been urging state residents to vote no:

The problem is that there’s a LOT of money flowing in the opposite direction thanks to deranged leftist billionaire George Soros.

“Virginians for Fair Elections, a main group fighting to get Virginia voters to approve a ballot referendum that will allow the state to redraw its congressional maps, has been pumped with millions in cash from a web of George Soros-backed dark money groups,” according to Fox News.

The group is no joke.

The Washington Post reports that it’s “spent $16 million on television ads, outspending anti-redistricting groups 10 to 1 on the airwaves.”

Despite this, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has alleged that it’s Republicans who “have spent tens of millions of dollars to lie.”

Virginians for Fair Elections has likewise raised a whopping $64 million, so much of it from dark money that the Post says that “figuring out where [its] money came from is like unpacking a Russian nesting doll, with layers of other interest groups contributing cash without any requirement that they disclose where their money originated.”

Thankfully, Fox News is evidently good at unpacking Russian nesting dolls. The network notes that the largest donor this year to Virginians for Fair Elections has been the House Majority Forward, “the nonprofit counterpart of House Democrats’ House Majority PAC.”

“Meanwhile, entities directly tied to Soros, or that obtained significant funding which can be traced back to the billionaire Democrat megadonor, come in second and third in terms of total giving to the group,” the network’s reporting continues.

One of these groups, the Fund for Policy Reform Inc., was directly founded by Soros.

“The other, titled The Fairness Project, has been funded by groups like the Sixteen Thirty Fund, Hopewell Fund, and the Tides Foundation, which Soros has given significant funding to,” according to Fox News.

Conversely, the primary group fighting against the referendum, Virginians for Fair Maps, has only raised around $20 million, though its money is also dark money.

The Post notes that it boasts “an extra layer of masking that obscures the source of its funding” and that “its top donor is listed in state records as Virginians for Fair Maps, a separate group that shares its name with the referendum committee.”

If the referendum passes and the districts are redrawn to favor Democrats, it could have a huge outcome in the midterms.

“Coupled with the new maps that voters in California approved in November, the new Virginia seats would cancel out most, if not all, of the Republican redistricting gains made last year in states including North Carolina, Ohio, Missouri, and Texas, where President Trump and state Republicans kicked off the mid-decade gerrymandering scramble,” the New York Times notes.
