A group claiming to be Republicans endorsed a number of Democrats and moderate Republicans on Thursday for the 2022 midterm elections in an effort to stop those who support former President Trump from being reelected.
The coalition of centrists call themselves the Renew America Movement (RAM) and have announced their support for a raft of lawmakers who are seeking reelection in the midterms according to The Hill. A group of moderate Republicans founded the movement following the Jan. 6 Capitol riot. They blame Trump for claiming the November 2020 presidential election was fraudulent and are accusing him of fomenting an insurrection.
“There is an urgent effort by Republicans and former Republicans to stem the tide of anti-democratic and lie-based Republican leaders in Congress before it’s too late,” RAM asserted in its announcement.
“Today, Renew America announced its Renewer Watchlist. The Renewer Watchlist is comprised of Republicans, Democrats, and Independents who are working toward real electoral victories,” the group tweeted.

Those endorsed by the group are the ones who have criticized Trump on various issues. That includes Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) who sits on the Jan. 6 commission and has also supported the impeachment of the former president. Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) is also part of the group.

Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) who also voted to impeach Trump is being endorsed by the group as well.
Eleven Democrat members of the House and Senate made RAM’s list and almost all of them are facing tight races. Those include Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ), who is running in a marquee Senate race in Arizona in 2022. Others include House members such as Reps. Abigail Spanberger (D-VA) and Jared Golden (D-ME).
“With the mounting threats to our democracy and Constitution, we need people who work proactively to lead their party and the country away from the political extremes,” Joel Searby, who is RAM’s national political director, told Reuters.

Trump has endorsed a large number of Republicans who support him and share his views. The moderate Republicans and leftist Democrats running for reelection will face an uphill battle as their popularity is tied to President Biden. The former president vowed to fight in the midterms.
RAM’s leadership includes a number of Republicans who served in the Trump administration. They have since turned on the former president and have been very vocal in their criticism of him. They include former White House communications director Anthony Scaramucci and Department of Homeland Security official Miles Taylor.
