Rising Dem star Wes Moore denies he’s running for president

Despite some open support from Democrats, a 2028 presidential run is reportedly off the table for Maryland Gov. Wes Moore.

He told NBC News’s Kristen Welker that he is “excited about reelection” as governor and threw cold water on Democratic hopes that he will step in to lead the tattered party as a contender for 2028.

Asked on NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday if he planned to serve out a full term as governor if he’s reelected in 2026, Moore effectively took his name out of the running for the 2028 Democratic presidential nomination.

“Yes, I’ll be serving a full term,” Moore said. “I’m excited about reelection. I’m excited about what I’m going to be able to do for the people of Maryland.”

“Do you rule out a run for president, governor?” Welker asked.

“Yeah, I’m not running for president,” Moore replied, prompting Welker to press, “You rule it out?”

“Yes, I’m not running for president,” the governor repeated.

“You completely rule it out?” Welker asked.

“I’m so excited about what we’re doing. That we’ve gone from 43rd in the country in unemployment to now one of the lowest unemployment rates,” Moore responded. “We’ve had among the fastest drops in violent crime anywhere in the United States of America. Our population is growing, Maryland is moving,” Moore said. “And so, I’m really excited about going back in front of the people of my state and asking for another term.”

Moore’s name began to rise as a potential candidate as he garnered more attention in a battle of words with President Donald Trump in recent weeks. The president has threatened to deploy the National Guard to Baltimore.

“But if Wes Moore needs help, like Gavin Newscum did in L.A., I will send in the ‘troops,’ which is being done in nearby DC, and quickly clean up the Crime,” Trump wrote on Truth Social last month.

Moore has claimed that Trump’s plan to send in the Guard would be “performative” and not effective, while last week he announced a “renewed collaboration” between the Baltimore City Police Department and the Maryland State Police.

“We do not need an occupation, and we do not need people putting in performative and theatrical resources,” Moore said during a press conference. “If you want to learn what works, come spend time and learn what we need.”

With Moore taking himself out of the running for a 2028 nomination, Democrats continue to seek a way back into power, but so far, they have a handful of questionable contenders.

California Governor Gavin Newsom continues to jockey for the crown, and former Vice President Kamala Harris’s name is still being floated. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, and Governors Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania and Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan are also on a list of potential 2028 candidates.
