“It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner. We are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and we ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time,” the Reiner family said in a statement.
Reiner was a fixture on the Hollywood scene for more than five decades since his star-making role as Archie Bunker’s “pinko” son-in-law Michael “Meathead” Stivic in the iconic 1970s television sitcom “All in the Family,” going on to become a renowned director whose most memorable works included “When Harry Met Sally,” “A Few Good Men,” “The Princess Bride,” and ‘Misery.”
He was also one of Hollywood’s most vitriolic critics of President Donald J. Trump and a serial promoter of conspiracy theories and hoaxes, including Russiagate and the J6 “insurrection,” and had repeatedly called for Trump’s imprisonment in years of unhinged social media posts. Reiner deleted his X account after the 2024 election.
Top Democrats expressed their shock and sorrow at the tragic news, taking to X to share their grief.
“Michelle and I are heartbroken by the tragic passing of Rob Reiner and his beloved wife, Michele. Rob’s achievements in film and television gave us some of our most cherished stories on screen. But beneath all of the stories he produced was a deep belief in the goodness of people—and a lifelong commitment to putting that belief into action,” wrote former President Barack Obama.

“Rob and I remained good friends ever since we made GHOSTS OF MISSISSIPPI. The studio didn’t think I was old enough to do the part, but Rob fought for me. Political differences never stood in the way of our love and respect for each other. I am devastated by this terrible event,” conservative actor James Woods said in a post to X.
