‘Says it all doesn’t it’: Republicans can’t believe Ukraine funding exempted from potential shutdown

The Pentagon has exempted Ukraine funding from a potential government shutdown, prompting massive backlash from congressional Republicans.

“The Pentagon has determined that the training and support of Ukrainian forces is exempt from a potential government shutdown … and will continue even in the increasingly likely event that Congress fails to pass a spending bill in the coming days,” CNN reported Thursday.

“Operation Atlantic Resolve is an excepted activity under a government lapse in appropriations,” Department of Defense spokesperson Chris Sherwood likewise confirmed to Fox News.

Operation Atlantic Resolve “provides rotational deployments of combat-credible forces to Europe to show our commitment to NATO while building readiness, increasing interoperability and enhancing the bonds between ally and partner militaries,” according to a press release.

This news prompted a whirlwind of backlash from Republicans on Twitter:

“Enough of the insanity already. Seems like Biden fell asleep on the train and got off at Ukraine instead of America,” one of the Republicans, Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, said in a statement to Fox News.

“I don’t even know if he recognizes which country he’s leading, he’s so hellbent on sending every possible dollar to a country that we have no stake in while our own implodes. I have zero interest in funding an eternal WWIII and that’s the last thing Americans want,” she added.

Even some Republicans’ staffers got in on the  backlash.

“Cut off services for Americans but keep sending their money to Ukraine. How incredibly offensive,” Sen. Josh Hawley’s communications director, Abigail Jackson, tweeted.

Meanwhile, former Arizona gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake posted a tweet accusing President Joe Biden of caring more about Ukrainians than Americans.

“America First Republicans are demanding fiscal responsibility. But the only thing the @JoeBiden administration cares about is funding their proxy war in Ukraine. They treat hard-working Americans as bargaining chips. Our families never asked to be part of their game,” she wrote.

There’s also been backlash from GOP voters like pro-Trump political commentator Gunther Eagleman, who tweeted that it seems like the Biden administration cares more about taking care of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy than about the American people.

“Zelensky over senior citizens. The government hates us,” he wrote on Twitter.

Another GOP voter, Malcolm Jayne, added, “This is an actual coup. The Pentagon doesn’t get to tell Congress what’s exempt. You are ruled. And those rulers think Ukraine is more important than you.”

All this comes in the wake of congressional lawmakers refusing to support adding Ukraine funding to a potential appropriations bill or continuing resolution.

It also comes in the wake of Rep. Mike Waltz writing a Fox News column slamming the Biden administration for not defining a clear objective nor a way to achieve it.

“The Biden administration has neither explained the American objective in Ukraine nor his strategy to achieve it. Will American military spending continue until Ukraine has pushed Russia back to its prewar boundaries? Its pre-2014 boundaries? Or until the Putin regime collapse? We don’t know because Biden refuses to tell us. ‘As long as it takes’ is a slogan, not a strategy,” he wrote.

He also said that so long as the U.S. border is being overrun, no money should be sent to Ukraine.

“Now illegal alien crossings are on the rise again, with 130,000 apprehended in July. Even Democratic mayors of blue cities are asking for action on the border. As long as Biden refuses to secure our southern border, Americans shouldn’t be asked to continue funding the defense of Ukraine’s,” he explained.
