Schiff’s attempt to shame Hegseth over military ‘surf and turf’ meals gets shoved down his own throat

Democrats and their flunkies in the media have been furiously flogging a report that the Pentagon spent $93 billion in one month to shame Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, but it has already blown up in the face of Sen. Adam Schiff (D-CA), who only made himself look like a fool for the umpteenth time.

According to the report from nonprofit watchdog Open The Books, the money spent in September 2025 included “$2 million on Alaskan king crab,” “$6.9 million of lobster tail,” and “$15.1 million of ribeye steak” along with money for ice cream machines and sushi tables.

A minuscule portion of the overall spending, but items that were guaranteed to make alluring material for hit pieces targeting Hegseth, while omitting the context that “surf and turf” has long been a military tradition to reward troops returning from a deployment.

A shameless serial hoaxster and conspiracy monger, Schiff used a clip from the party’s soon to be fired late night propagandist Stephen Colbert to strike out at Hegseth, and only ended up being on the receiving end of his own sucker punch.

The reliance in their late night “comics” to promote the propaganda – Jimmy Kimmel also got the talking points – shows how pathetic that today’s Democrats have become, and Schiff was soundly roasted by X users.

Shifty Schiff wasn’t the only Democrat using the distorted report to score cheap political points.

X reader community notes served up the proper context of the expenditures for the steak and lobster.

“Across branches and generations, service members have circulated a widely recognized belief: when steak and lobster appear in the dining facility, something significant may be coming. Often described as a ‘surf and turf’ meal, the combination has become embedded in military culture as a symbolic precursor to deployments, combat operations, or extended missions,” according to a Military.com article cited for the fact check.

“Deployed dining operations have long included occasional premium meals as a morale measure. Larger bases and ships may serve steak or seafood during holidays, commemorations, or after intensive mission cycles. These meals can carry emotional and symbolic weight because they contrast sharply with routine field rations or austere dining conditions,” Military.com noted.
