The Eastern Seaboard is getting absolutely soaked right now, and all that rain is having some unintended consequences.
Nor’easter storms are notoriously bad, but Surf City, New Jersey, is seeing what happens when flooding invites in local wildlife. A viral video shows a dogfish shark casually swimming up a resident’s driveway before heading toward Barnegat Bay on Saturday.

“The Atlantic spiny dogfish fishery operates from Maine to Florida and from inshore to offshore waters on the edge of the continental shelf,” NOAA Fisheries explains. “The spiny dogfish fishery uses predominantly bottom gillnets, with lesser amounts caught by trawls and hook gear. There is little consumer demand for spiny dogfish in the United States, but it is commonly used in Europe as the fish in ‘fish and chips.’ U.S. wild-caught Atlantic spiny dogfish is a smart seafood choice because it is sustainably managed and responsibly harvested under U.S. regulations.”
It also goes by several different names, such as Dogfish shark, Cape dogfish, Cape shark, Spring dogfish, Spiked dogfish, Grayfish, Spur dog and Piked dogfish.
“Parts of the Jersey Shore, as well as southeastern New England, have received up to 2 to 3 or more inches of rain over the last 24 hours,” ABC News reported. “Another round of tidal flooding is also beginning as high tide rolls in on Sunday morning.”
“The storm has claimed at least one life. The New York Police Department confirmed to ABC News that a 56-year old man died after being struck by a falling tree on Saturday afternoon in Brooklyn while walking through a parking lot. In a statement on social media, Mayor Zohran Mamdani identified the man as Leighton Brown, an employee of the New York City Housing Authority,” the outlet continued.

“As of 9 a.m.: NYC has received 500 reports of trees down, and 2,500 customers are without power,” they wrote, adding that some precautions had been taken to keep people safe. “NYC Ferry service to Governors Island Landing is temporarily suspended. Seastreak’s Sandy Hook service is cancelled today. All other service between NYC (East 35th Street and BMB) and Highlands, NJ is operating as scheduled. NY Waterway’s Belford service is suspended. Empty tractor-trailers and tandems are prohibited on all MTA bridges and tunnels due to high winds. All trucks must use the lower level of the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge. Motorists are advised to drive at reduced speeds on the Bronx-Whitestone, Throgs Neck, and Cross Bay bridges. Pedestrian walkways on the Marine Parkway and Cross Bay bridges are closed.”
