Nasir Ahmad Tawhedi the 27-year-old Afghan national who is being charged with planning a terror attack on the United States, reportedly worked for the CIA while in Afghanistan.
NBC News reported the shocking tie, further explaining that Tawhedi worked as a security guard for the agency, not as an informant. He was arrested in Oklahoma on Monday and stands accused of planning a radical ISIS-inspired terror attack to allegedly be carried out on Election Day, as Americans gather to choose the next president.
According to the report, it is unclear whether Tawhedi was radicalized before or after coming to the United States. As Daily Caller News Foundation previously reported, he had come into the country ahead of the botched US pullout of Afghanistan.
“Tawhedi gained entry to the U.S. as a special immigrant in September 2021 amid the Taliban’s takeover of Kabul during the Biden-Harris administration and is now facing 35 years in prison if convicted of all charges, the complaint stated,” the report explains.
“The DOJ revealed that Tawhedi took extensive measures to prepare for this assault, including liquidating his family’s assets and arranging their move overseas. The arrest occurred as Tawhedi, along with a juvenile accomplice, allegedly finalized the purchase of two AK-47 rifles, magazines, and substantial ammunition from undercover FBI operatives in a rural location,” the article continues.
Somehow, Tawahedi was able to pass through all the vetting processes while gaining approval to enter the country.
“The official said Tawhedi was first screened before he entered the U.S. on what is known as humanitarian parole in September 2021, about 10 days after the last U.S. troops left Afghanistan. The source said he was vetted again while living in Oklahoma City when he applied for a Special Immigrant Visa,” NBC reported. “He was eligible for the visa because he had worked for the U.S. government. He was approved for the visa, the official said, but he had not taken the final steps to make it official. Special Immigrant Visas are given to Afghans who worked with the U.S. in Afghanistan after they pass DHS screening.”
“The screening process includes searching for any possible ties to terrorism, ISIS or the Taliban using data from the applicant’s electronic devices, biometrics, and other sources to search the extensive databases the U.S. compiled over 20 years in Afghanistan.”
Other officials debate the kind of process Tawhadi underwent, claiming he entered the United States on “humanitarian parole” rather than a “Special Immigrant Visa.” They claim the humanitarian parole involves much less scrutiny than the Special Immigrant Visa, which could explain how any potential terror ties could have been missed, had Tawhedi been radicalized prior to his migration to America.
