President Joe Biden let slip at a fundraiser in New York City Thursday night what many already suspect, which is that Barack Obama has been “helping out a lot.”
When top Obama lieutenant Susan Rice was named Biden’s domestic policy adviser — she just stepped down — it was clear that Biden’s old boss would have considerable influence in his administration, and while speaking at the campaign fundraiser the commander in chief let it be known that he still considers himself second fiddle to Obama even though we are told that Biden drew nearly 12 million more votes than the former president in the 2020 election.
“By the way, I got to tell you, I had lunch with Barack the other day,” Biden said early on. “And I was kidding him; I said, ‘Every time I hear…’ — he’s helping out a lot — I said, ‘Every time I hear Hail to the Chief, I turn around and look for you, wondering where the hell you are.'”
“No, you think I’m kidding. I’m not,” he continued. “Secret Service looks at me sometimes like, ‘That’s you. Come on out.'”
Given the serious, widespread concern about his declining cognitive abilities, Biden’s handlers might want to advise him not to make jokes about it.
Biden has held several fundraisers this week, including in New York, Chicago and Chevy Chase, Maryland, these efforts suggesting some life in a so-far lethargic presidential campaign.

Back when Biden announced he was running for reelection, Obama pitched in then as well: “Proud of all that @JoeBiden and his administration have accomplished these last few years. He’s delivered for the American people — and he’ll continue to do so once he’s re-elected. Let’s get to work!”
