Some Dems plot comeback with platform that ‘embraces patriotism’

Democrats are trying to ditch their loser image and are plotting ways to appeal to more Americans.

President Donald Trump’s 2024 electoral win threw the Democratic Party for a loop. The complete domination by the Republican Party resulted in the group being forced to do some soul-searching, discovering all the reasons they could not get average Americans to pull the lever for their policies. It would appear they finally got their answer and are making moves to correct their previous mistakes, and it’s going to leave radical progressives out to dry.

A group of moderate Democrats are working to restore their party’s reputation by embracing patriotism and distancing themselves from the fringe radicals who appear to represent their side of the political aisle. They call themselves Third Way, and describe themselves as a center-leaning Dem think tank, according to The New York Post, and convened a group of “elected leaders, consultants, staffers and others” to discuss the obstacles facing the party.

“Activist groups and progressive staffers push unpopular cultural positions, making it seem like Democrats are more extreme than they actually are,” the Post reports as coming from a summary of the event. “Operatives and campaigns must remember that activist groups exist to promote their single issue and raise money around it, not to make Democrats electable.”

One of the biggest contentions of the group was that far-left radicals were allowed to effectively dictate the party’s platform and said “Democrats often let Republicans set the terms of cultural debates” but must articulate “their own positions in a way that resonates with voters.”

While the retreat covered a wide range of discussions related to the party’s future, the Post reported on some highlights including:

  • “Democrats focus too much on America’s flaws (racism, sexism, inequality) without acknowledging the country’s progress and potential.”
  • “Embrace patriotism, community, and traditional American imagery.”
  • “Avoid overly moralistic or condescending messaging; speak plainly and directly.”
  • “Own the failures of Democratic governance in large cities and commit to improving local government.”

Public affairs exec Matt Bennett told Politico that it wasn’t former Vice President Kamala Harris that damaged the party’s reputation. Rather, it was the other way around.

“In the wake of this election, where it became so evident that the things that the left was doing and saying deeply hurt Harris and down-ballot Democrats, a lot of people are looking to us, not just Third Way, but the moderates in the party, and saying, ‘We got to do it your way, because the other way ain’t working.’”

It remains to be seen if elected officials within the party will be able to separate themselves from the loud fringe that appears to control things.
