A George Soros-backed Louisiana district attorney, who ran a campaign on bail reform and social justice, just became the victim of a violent crime.
Orleans Parish District Attorney Jason Williams and his elderly mother were carjacked at gunpoint on Monday in New Orleans by two suspects, according to reports which were confirmed by district attorney’s office spokesperson Keith Lampkin.
“OPDA confirms that DA Williams and his 78-year-old mother were carjacked at gunpoint as he was helping her into a car,” Lampkin told WVUE in New Orleans. “DA Williams and his mother were unharmed, and both thank the [New Orleans Police Department] for their hard work tonight and every night responding to crime victims.”
At around 10 p.m. on Race Street in the Lower Garden District, the two armed suspects allegedly demanded Williams’ black Lincoln Navigator, according to the New Orleans Police Department. The suspects did not get far, however, as the district attorney reportedly held on to the key fob in his pocket.
The vehicle was recovered later “at an undisclosed Uptown location,” according to police, WVUE reported. The NOPD noted that the same three suspects were responsible for another carjacking half a mile away about 30 minutes after targeting Williams. Early Wednesday reports indicate that two arrests have been made.
“It’s been a long night,” Williams, who reportedly only has a security detail during work hours, told a reporter from the station around 12:40 a.m. as he spoke with police outside his home later.
The audio from Williams’ 911 call was obtained by WWL-TV which shared it in an online news report.
“They kept repeating get out of the car, get out of the car,” Williams told the station. “I said okay, put my hands up, two guns, I’m not going to fight anybody. But I said I can’t until I get my mom out of the car.”
“It is every bit as horrific as it sounded when I have sat and listened to crime victims,” Williams told WWL-TV about the experience.
“Fox 8 spoke again with an emotional Williams at his office Tuesday just before noon. He said the masked suspects did not appear to be juveniles. He said they brandished high-powered automatic weapons and made off with some of his mother’s belongings,” the outlet reported.”Williams said his mother is still reliving the terror that unfolded within a matter of seconds near his home. He said those traumatic seconds can change crime victims’ lives forever.”
“I think it’s important to reiterate that my mother and I are just a small fraction of the number of people impacted by violence in this city,” Williams said. “We have to collectively work on crime-prevention efforts, policing efforts and our prosecution efforts.”
The criminal division of Attorney General Jeff Landry’s office will reportedly handle the case if arrests are made as Williams indicated that he and his office would recuse themselves from prosecuting suspects in connection with his carjacking.
“We’ve seen some carjackings that have ended in homicide,” Metropolitan Crime Commission president Rafael Goyeneche said. “The line between a carjacking in which no one is injured and a carjacking where someone loses their life is a little pressure on the trigger of the firearm.”
Though Williams has spoken out about the “pandemic of violence” ravaging his city and others in the nation, he has been criticized for “selective prosecutions” as the district attorney.
“Being more selective about prosecutions will allow us to focus on the crimes that matter most to all of us,” Williams said after he was sworn in. “We’ve got to go beyond punishment and invest in our community.”
During the first months of his tenure, his office dismissed 937 of the city’s 1,411 violent felony cases, according to a study by the Metropolitan Crime Commission.
“When Williams was elected in 2020, he ran on a platform of social justice reform with intentions of finding ‘alternatives to incarceration’ for some criminals, while also changing what he considered an ‘ineffective and unfair money bail system.'” Fox News reported. “One of his campaign backers, billionaire Democratic donor George Soros, reportedly donated $220,000 to the Louisiana Justice and Public Safety PAC that year, which helped fund ad campaigns against Williams’ opponent, according to the Capital Research Center.”
