Spencer Pratt teams up with unlikely ally to take on Karen Bass over LA fires

Former Los Angeles mayoral candidate Spencer Pratt is taking his legal battle over deadly wildfires to a new level.

Pratt’s relentless criticism of Mayor Karen Bass and her failures during the California wildfires that destroyed countless homes, including his own, has added a surprising ally in his lawsuit against the city.

“I am proud to be teaming up with Karen Bass’ brother in suing his sister for her reckless negligence that led to the destruction of our homes,” Pratt announced in a social media post on Sunday.

“I hope their Thanksgiving dinner isn’t too awks. I know ours hasn’t been the same since last year…,” he added.

Pratt and his wife, Heidi Montag, filed a lawsuit last year against Los Angeles and the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power after the fires destroyed their Pacific Palisades home. The mayor’s brother, Kenneth Bass, and his wife, Cindy, also filed a lawsuit after losing their Malibu home to fire, claiming they suffered physical injuries and emotional distress, according to the complaint reviewed by L.A. Material.

“The couple’s claim, which has not been previously reported, is among thousands of claims lodged by home and business owners in connection with the fire that erupted on Jan. 7, 2025, and pushed westward into Malibu,” L.A. Material reported.

“The lawsuits from residents have proceeded through state court and swelled to include thousands of claimants. The case has now been consolidated into one ‘master’ lawsuit outlining the allegations against DWP, along with the state of California and a few telecommunications companies, among others,” the outlet noted. “Mayor Bass’ brother and sister-in-law joined this 186-page master suit – in essence, adding their names to a boilerplate form with other claimants.”

The mayor’s office claimed that there was “nothing new” in her brother’s involvement with the lawsuit.

“Thousands of people are plaintiffs in this action, which names 18 public and private sector defendants,” a spokesperson told The Hill. “The City Attorney’s Office is responsible for defending the City and DWP in this lawsuit.”

During a Pacific Palisades Community Council meeting in January 2025, Bass reportedly said, “The loss that you’re going through, I share indirectly. It’s hit my family too.”

“My brother, who has lived in Malibu for 40 years, been through many fires, evacuated many times — this time didn’t get away,” she said at the time, according to the Los Angeles Times.
