Squad-endorsed socialist wins contentious primary in historic district

A far-left candidate backed by the “Squad” has come away as the winner in the Democratic primary for Pennsylvania’s 3rd Congressional District.

Chris Rabb, a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, clinched the nomination in the crowded primary contest in what is seen as the nation’s most Democratic district.

“With no clear Republican challenger, Tuesday night’s winner is expected to sail to victory in November in what is considered the nation’s most Democratic Congressional District,” Fox News noted.

Rabb accrued endorsements from a who’s who list of progressive figures, locally and nationally. That includes U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), who joined him for a campaign rally Friday, and other members of the “Squad,” including U.S. Reps. Ilhan Omar (D-MN), Ro Khanna (D-CA), and Jamie Raskin (D-MD), according to WHYY.

The 56-year-old was also endorsed by the left-wing Working Families Party and the Justice Democrats, as well as Philadelphia City Council Minority Leader Kendra Brooks and Minority Whip Nicolas O’Rourke, both members of the Working Families Party.

Politico noted that Rabb’s victory “is as much an exclamation point for progressives as it is a remarkable rebuke of Philadelphia’s Democratic machine.”

“It’s a major win for the party’s left flank and a significant blow to the city’s storied political machine, which split between two other candidates in the race,” the outlet reported, noting how Rabb beat out former chairman of the Pennsylvania Democratic Party, State Sen. Sharif Street who had the backing of most of the city’s establishment, including the endorsement of the state party and Mayor Cherelle Parker.

“They told me this wasn’t possible. That’s what they said,” he said during a victory speech. “I don’t know who they are, but I know who we are. I’m looking at ‘We the people.’ And I’m not talking about we the people 250 years ago. That was a much smaller we. I’m talking about the aggressive fabulosity of this we.”

If Rabb goes on to victory in November, his “platform would make him one of the harshest critics of Israel in Congress,”  according to The Times of Israel.

“He supports a complete embargo on arms sales to Israel. He posted on X last week that ‘the Nakba never ended,’ and said he would co-sponsor a resolution with Omar and Tlaib to ‘recognize the Nakba and reaffirm Palestinian refugees’ right to return,'” the outlet reported.
