While woke ideology had undoubtedly permeated the federal government beforehand, President Joe Biden’s administration has made it a mission focus since his inauguration. Now, one of its defenders is expected to step down in September after being appointed in Aug. 2021.
The resignation of outgoing Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness Gil Cisneros, a former California congressman, was announced Monday in a press release from Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin who touted the official’s “leadership” on things like “access to reproductive health care and contraceptives…”
However, Cisneros is better known for his defense of the DoD’s diversity chief for their education wing, Kelisa Wing. In March, following a six-month-long investigation, the undersecretary testified that Wing, the author of “What Is White Privilege?” had been determined to be “speaking in a personal capacity” when she had slammed white people and “As a result, the Director, DoDEA took no disciplinary action.”

Wing’s investigated behavior included a tweet where she had lamented, “I’m so exhausted at these white folx in these PD sessions this lady actually had the CAUdacity to say that black people can be racist too….I had to stop the session and give Karen the BUSINESS…we are not the majority, we don’t have power.”
Reacting to the news of Cisneros’ departure, Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) who had been among those grilling the undersecretary earlier this year, told Fox News, “This is long overdue. While Gil Cisneros was in charge, DoD schools hired an DEI official who had made multiple public racist statements on her Twitter account.”
She further expressed, “Cisneros then enabled this Chief DEI officer to proliferate her own books containing radical racial ideology throughout our Servicemembers children’s schools. Instead of answering for this unacceptable behavior, Gil Cisneros covered up for his employee and has tried to keep Congress and U.S. Servicemembers in the dark about DoD’s school’s curriculum and hiring practices.”
“White privilege hurts a lot of people,” Wing had written in her book on the subject. “If you are White you might feel bad about hurting others or you might feel afraid to lose this privilege.”
Cisneros noted that the DEI chief had been “reassigned to another position that does not include diversity, equity and inclusion-specific responsibilities” as “part of headquarters restructuring.”
That move seemed to be part of a broader effort by the DoD to obscure the pervasiveness of woke ideology as they have repeatedly come under fire from conservative lawmakers over such issues. In fact, Wing’s reassignment hardly seemed related to her behavior as it was reported shortly after by Fox News that “DoDEA’s director, Tom Brady, said he will be dispersing the DEI specialists into existing units as part of a ‘reconfiguration of talent.'”
In his statement on Cisneros’ departure, Austin said in part, “…he was a steadfast and faithful servant in the department’s mission to take care of our people. His commitment to the ‘people first’ approach helped the department improve the quality of life of our service members and their families.”
The undersecretary’s “commitment” included commenting in June that “LGBTQ+ and other diverse communities are under attack, just because they are different.”
“Hate for hate’s sake,” he added, and claimed that military personnel “must stick together and we must be prepared to confront any such challenge directly.”
Neither his next move nor a potential replacement was announced at the time of this post.
