While inflation, the economy and a historic wave of illegal immigrants flowing into the country rank as high concerns for Americans, these troubling factors were not the top concern.
A new Gallup poll shows a lack of leadership from President Joe Biden and Congress is the country’s biggest problem, which is appropriate considering they are largely responsible for the problems noted above.
“The government ranks as the top problem for both Republicans and Republican-leaning independents (24%) and Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents (18%),” Gallup reported.
The poll was taken from Jan. 2 through Jan. 22 and included the contentious four-day process in which Republicans, who now control the House, elected Kevin McCarthy to be speaker, AND the beginnings of the Biden classified documents scandal, according to the survey.
At the same time, as mentions of the government as the nation’s top problem rose six points this month to 21%, job approval ratings of Biden (41%) and Congress (21%) remained flat, the polling outfit said.
As for the economy, Americans are not feeling rosy but the issue saw a six-point drop to 10%, the lowest reading in a year — one could argue that folks voted against their better interests in the midterms when they broke from recent tradition and rewarded the party in power under such conditions.
“Currently, more than four in five U.S. adults rate economic conditions in the country as only fair (38%) or poor (45%), with few describing conditions as excellent (2%) or good (15%). Furthermore, 72% of Americans say the economy is getting worse, 22% say it is improving, and 4% think it is staying the same,” Gallup noted.
Inflation remains the second most-cited problem, according to the survey, which then cited “elevated tensions about the southern U.S. border” to report that illegal immigration edged up three percentage points to 11%.
