A converted atheist used his own expertise against the misquotes and maligned agenda of a Senate hopeful’s “perverted version” of Christianity.
Efforts to frame the teachings of Jesus Christ as a model for socialism are nothing new, and they’ve been especially prominent throughout the 2026 Senate campaign of Texas state Rep. James Talarico (D). While the politician has repeatedly been accused of hollowing out Christianity and wrapping himself in it like a skin suit to dupe Lone Star State voters, Just Facts co-founder Jim Agresti brought receipts to demonstrate how Talarico has been “butchering the Bible.”
During an interview with Fox News Digital, Agresti, author of the book “Rational Conclusions,” decried the lawmaker: “Talarico bills himself as a Christian. He talks about how he’s a seminarian. He frequently quotes the words or misquotes the words of Jesus. And he tries to also, at the very same time, say, ‘I hate Christian nationalism,’ while he’s imposing his own version, a perverted version, of Christian morals on the public.”

Acknowledging that it’s up to God to determine what’s in Talarico’s heart, the president of Just Facts asserted that from the first time he’d heard the politician, he concluded, “He’s perverting the words of Jesus, and he’s also flouting the U.S. Constitution.”
“In every single instance,” said Agresti of Bible verses about helping the needy, “it’s about self-sacrificing generosity.”
Talarico shared his own take that aligned with a Marxist worldview in a recent post that featured the caption, “When Jesus healed the sick, he didn’t ask for a deductible. When he fed the hungry, he didn’t price gouge for a profit. When the Hebrew prophets saw corruption, they spoke truth to power. When I take on this corrupt system, I’m doing it on biblical grounds.”

Addressing the parable of the Good Samaritan in particular, Agresti reminded, “It was about an individual who saw someone in desperate need and sacrificed their own time and their own money to help that person. There was no role for government.”
“He’s not even offering to give away his own money. He’s offering to take money from others and then give it to other people,” the speaker went on to say of the Senate hopeful.
Agresti’s criticism of Talarico is just the latest exposure of the politician’s self-styled Christianity. As previously reported, the self-described “Christian who hates Christianity” has lauded gender ideology, claimed “God is nonbinary,” and asserted the Annunciation was God asking the Virgin Mary for consent as a means to justify his own position on abortion.
More recently, it was revealed through a Daily Caller investigation that the seminarian’s home church, St. Andrew’s Presbyterian, uses a so-called “Inclusive Bible” that scrubs references to Jesus Christ as the Son of God. It also eliminates the use of “Lord” to keep snowflakes from melting.
Following that, undercover reporting by Daily Wire featured St. Andrew’s Rev. Babs Miller denying the Virgin Birth and contending, “We have no way of knowing if Jesus really existed,” adding, “And whether or not Jesus existed doesn’t really matter to me.”

Despite his record, exceeding what was covered here, a statement from Talarico spokesperson JT Ennis to Fox News Digital maintained, “James is a Christian seminarian who’s dedicated his life to the teachings of Jesus Christ — fighting corruption when he sees it because there’s nothing Christ-like about powerful people using scripture to justify hate and greed and score political points. While billionaire-bought politicians like Ken Paxton attack James for his faith — he will continue encouraging Texans to come together by loving their neighbors as themselves.”
