The swamp’s soft-on-crime standards found U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro stepping up to fill the “need for accountability” after “Big Balls” assailants got a slap on the wrist.
Censorship of a tweet from The Babylon Bee has often been credited for the chain of events that led to Elon Musk purchasing then-Twitter and promoting free speech absolutism on the rebranded platform X. Now it appears that avalanche of reform can be said to include a return of the rule of law in the nation’s capital as Pirro announced federal charges against the young men alleged to have attacked the billionaire’s former Department of Government Efficiency staffer, Edward Coristine.
During a press conference Monday, the U.S. attorney detailed that Lawrence Cotton Powell, 19, and Anthony Taylor, 18, were facing two counts of first-degree robbery and assault with intent to commit robbery — each punishable by up to 15 years in prison — and attempted carjacking with a penalty of up to five years in prison should the suspects be found guilty of the crimes against Coristine and the other victim, Ethan Levine.
“What’s significant about this case is the history of Lawrence Cotton Powell,” expressed Pirro after Judge Kendra Briggs allowed the suspects to walk away with probation while insisting her goal was to “rehabilitate, not to punish.”

The U.S. Attorney’s office had requested incarceration for the suspect regarding a prior assault after a felony only for a judge to suspend the sentence days before the attack on Coristine, “After a felony of attempted robbery conviction, after a violation of probation, after a second crime, after a second conviction, after no compliance with [Court Services and Offender Supervision Agency], the judges say, ‘Do better,’ and they let him go. And guess what? Within ten days, he’s at it again.”
The suspects were said to have assaulted and robbed Levine moments before the attack on Coristine, which left him with a broken nose and a concussion. The young man reportedly saw the attackers coming and pushed his friend into her car for her safety.
“[Coristine] was then attacked by multiple suspects who then punched him repeatedly, causing significant injuries to him,” explained the U.S. Attorney. “They got him on the ground, and as they were doing so, they demanded the car from the woman who was inside the car and had already locked the car. They were banging on the car, they were pulling on the car door, trying to get the car open, and were telling the woman in the car to hand over the keys.”
Pirro called on Washington, D.C.’s City Council to take action as the current laws “allow these young people to go out and victimize, re-victimize and keep re-victimizing and putting the safety of the citizens who live, work and visit here at risk.”
“I ask them to stand up finally and send a clear message, because the people of this district deserve no less than safety,” she added.
Prior to the charges, the attack on Coristine was considered a catalyst in President Donald Trump taking action to address crime in D.C. by temporarily taking federal control of the Metropolitan Police Department and sending in the National Guard.
“Crime in Washington, D.C., is totally out of control,” wrote the president on Truth Social as he’d shared an image of Coristine’s bloodied face after the attack. “Local ‘youths’ and gang members, some only 14, 15, and 16 years old, are randomly attacking, mugging, maiming, and shooting innocent Citizens, at the same time knowing that they will be almost immediately released.”
“They are not afraid of Law Enforcement because they know nothing ever happens to them, but it’s going to happen now!” asserted Trump, who’d also called for a change to the local laws before warning, “If this continues, I am going to exert my powers and FEDERALIZE this City. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
