A man convicted of murder was summarily executed in front of his victim’s family and thousands of others at a football stadium on Monday by the Taliban in Afghanistan.

“The man – found guilty of a January 2022 knife murder – was executed in northern Sheberghan city on a death warrant signed by Taliban chief Hibatullah Akhundzada, a Supreme Court statement said,” the Daily Mail reported.

“The statement identified the condemned man as Nazar Muhammad and said his case ‘was examined very thoroughly and repeatedly,'” the media outlet added.

Muhammad was shot five times by the brother of his victim with a rifle, according to an eyewitness. The execution took place in front of the victim’s family in heavy snowfall. Those attending included women and children as thousands looked on according to a local provincial official who spoke with the AFP. Security was extremely tight. It was the third death penalty execution in the last few days.

“Since the Taliban’s return to power in August 2021, a handful of executions have been conducted in accordance with their government’s austere vision of Islam,” the Daily Mail noted. “Akhundzada ordered judges in 2022 to fully implement all aspects of Islamic law – including ‘eye for an eye’ punishments known as ‘qisas.'”

Shariah law allows for the death penalty as retribution for murder. The Taliban government mercilessly imposes it.

Two other men were executed last week in Ghazni after their death warrants were also signed by Akhundzada. Fifteen shots were reportedly fired. Eight at one man, seven at the other. The families of their victims were also present at the time of execution.

“Abu Abu Khalid Sarhadi, a spokesman for Ghazni police, said that relatives of the victims executed the two men. He did not say what type of guns they used,” the Associated Press reported.

The AFP is reporting that this totals five executions carried out since the Taliban took power after the United States departed the country during President Biden’s watch. Flogging is common as well for crimes such as theft, adultery, and drinking alcohol.

Amnesty International has branded the execution policy by the Taliban government “a gross affront to human dignity.”

“Carrying out executions in public adds to the inherent cruelty of the death penalty,” the agency said via a statement.

“The development was ominous as the Taliban, despite initial promises of a more moderate rule, began carrying out severe punishments in public — executions, floggings, and stonings — shortly after coming to power. The punishments are similar to those under their previous rule of Afghanistan in the late 1990s,” Arab News commented.

“Separate statements from the Taliban’s supreme court said a man and a woman convicted of adultery were flogged with 35 lashes each in northern Balkh province over the weekend. Two other people were lashed in eastern Laghman province, also over the weekend; they were given each 30 lashes for allegedly committing immoral acts,” the outlet reported.
