Tragedy struck the community of Somers, New York after a prominent Mount Sinai oncologist shot and killed her baby before turning the gun on herself.
At approximately 7 a.m. on Saturday morning, Dr. Krystal Cascetta, 40, went into her baby girl’s bedroom where she executed the murder/suicide, Westchester Journal News reports. The child was estimated to be approximately 4 1/2 months old and was an only child.
Cascetta’s husband, Timothy Talty was away from home at the time, but the doctor’s parents were reportedly in the house when the shooting took place.
According to one of Cascetta’s neighbors, prior to the shootings, police and ambulances had made multiple trips to the million-dollar home.
“They had ambulances and police come to their house two, maybe three times this summer. At least twice,” neighbor Bob Stuart, 71, told the New York Post.

Although it is unclear why cops were called to the property, Stuart said, “I saw the police and ambulances arrive.”
“We know, 100%, without a doubt, that it was a murder-suicide,” State Trooper Steven Nevel said, according to NBC News, adding that he was unable to release more details.
Nevel did say that someone inside the home called 911 who ran into the baby’s room thinking something had fallen after the first gunshot was fired. Before the unidentified caller could make it to the room, the second shot rang out. Finding the door locked, the caller broke down the door and found the mother and child, both dead, inside.
Cascetta and Talty, who owns an energy-bar business, though nice, were such a private couple that residents say they didn’t even realize the doctor had been pregnant.
Stuart’s wife, Betsy, 71, told The Post that they were “very private people, kept to themselves.”

“They came over and introduced themselves when they moved in about two years ago, and then we never heard from them again,” she said. “We didn’t even know she was pregnant.”
The Stuarts’ son, Brad Stuart, 47, lives even closer to the doctor’s home. A commotion at his neighbor’s property woke him up on Saturday morning.
“Our dog Bruno just started going bananas at 6:45. I woke up to the dog freaking out, and I figured he really had to go out, so I took him out for a walk, and that’s when the police and the EMS and everybody rolled up,” he told The Post.
Brad, too, noted that Cascetta and Talty were a private couple.
“They’re very nice people, very pleasant, and they moved in about two years ago, and I’ve seen them maybe twice since then,” he said. “It’s horrible. How can he go on, losing your whole family all at once? How could she do that? It’s unbelievable.”
Cascetta was “site chief of the Mount Sinai Queens Infusion Center, a treatment center for cancer and blood disorders, and was an assistant professor of hematology and oncology at Mount Sinai’s Icahn School of Medicine,” according to Westchester Journal News.
By all accounts on social media, she and Talty, who married in 2019, lived an idyllic life. Cascetta even lent her medical expertise to Talty’s line of protein bars.
New York Times bestselling author, Kambri Crews — a patient of Dr. Cascetta — said she and other cancer survivors are “broken hearted.”
“Received some heartbreaking news today that my oncologist Dr. Krystal Cascetta of Mount Sinai Queens has died,” Crews wrote on Facebook. “A shocking & terrible tragedy. She was a star in her field, dedicated and lovely, whip smart and a competitive athlete.”
“I don’t know what was happening in her life that she felt this was the best end to her story, but I know a large community of survivors, patients and colleagues are broken hearted,” she said. “I will sorely miss her. She deeply cared for her patients and I am grateful that I was one.”
