Tragedy strikes when bride killed by celebratory gunfire at her own wedding

Mahvash Leghaei was tragically killed at her own wedding when one of the guests decided to fire off some celebratory gunshots in honor of the newly-hitched couple.

The Iranian couple had reportedly just finished with the wedding ceremony when the male guest whipped out a hunting rifle and blasted the rounds in a tradition that is illegal in the country of Iran. While the first shot went off without incident, the second shot went through the head of the bride and struck two other guests in attendance.

Colonel Mehdi Jokar, a police spokesperson, described the horrific incident.

“We had an emergency call of a shooting at a wedding hall in Firuzabad city and officers were dispatched immediately,” he said, going on to claim the shooting was the result of “poor control of the weapon” and “crowds.”

The gunman, who is allegedly a cousin of the groom, attempted to flee the scene but was caught by police a short time later. The rifle used was unlicensed.

“Naturally, any disturbance of public order like this crosses the red line with the police, and people need to know that to create a safe community, shooting is banned at weddings,” Jokar warned. “We will take tough action against anybody found to be breaking this rule.”

Leghaei, who was a social worker helping drug addicts get clean, fell into a coma following her injury, but later succumbed. Her organs were donated as per her wishes. The two other guests who were struck survived with minor injuries

Unfortunately, this kind of thing isn’t as uncommon as many people would like to think. In June, an Indian groom, Manish Madheshia, accidentally shot someone during his wedding in the Brahmnagar area of Sonbhadra district. Unfortunately, the accidental shot fired ended up killing the groom’s friend, Babu Lal Yadav, who was also the owner of the handgun that was to be used in the celebratory gunfire. The wedding party attempted to flee after Yadav was pronounced dead at the hospital, but the groom was detained and questioned. He was later arrested for the death of his friend.
