The trailer for the forthcoming film biography of trillionaire Elon Musk has dropped, and it describes the Tesla/SpaceX CEO as a real-life superhero as well as a fascist.
In the 49-second teaser for the nearly four-hour film titled “Musk,” which hits theatres next month, a series of rockets blasting off, falling back, and blowing up are shown along with snippets of commentary on perhaps the most influential – and controversial – figure of the 21st Century.
“He’s possibly the greatest living inventor,” one voice says of Musk. Another calls him “the real-life Iron Man,” referring to the Marvel Comics superhero, inventor/industrialist Tony Stark and his high-tech armored suit, a member of the “Avengers” MCU film franchise.
“He’s one of the greatest builders of all time,” says another, followed by a voice proclaiming the 55-year-old former DOGE boss as “the greatest capitalist in history.”

Others are less flattering.
“He’s chaotic, random, capricious,” a woman says, followed by a man’s voice branding Musk as “manifestly cruel and selfish.”
“In a science fiction novel, he would not be the hero,” a voice states, followed by another who says, “He is a man who has lost his mind.”
“He’s a fascist,” one person proclaims, dropping the left’s second favorite F-word.
“Elon is a nuke,” a woman says as video of a rocket spectacularly exploding is shown.
The film, which is the latest from documentarian Alex Gibney, will debut this week at the Venice Film Festival before getting its theatrical release in October.

Gibney, who has also made films about Enron, WikiLeaks, legendary “Gonzo” journalist Hunter S. Thompson, Apple founder Steve Jobs, and Frank Sinatra, talked to the Associated Press about his ambitious new movie.
“Nothing compares to this in terms of the scope of his power. What’s interesting about Musk is it’s not so much something that’s new as an old wine in a new bottle,” he said. “And Musk, I think like some of the characters that I’ve followed in the past, is afflicted with what some people call noble cause corruption.”
“That is to say, you begin to believe in a cause. And in Musk’s case, it was making us multiplanetary and also leading us into a more sustainable environmental world,” Gibney continued. “And because you’re in line with those important, valuable, good causes, anything you do in the service of those causes is OK. And ultimately that leads you to corruption.”
Musk did not participate in the project and, in 2023, called it a “hit piece” to which Gibney responded, “How would you know?”

Gibney was asked by AP whether the world’s richest man tried to meddle in the making of the movie.
“He didn’t really except in so far as the fact that people were terribly afraid to speak to me on the record, or at least on camera. They were just terrified of Elon,” the director said. “And these were people in his companies. These were people who knew him well. These were supporters and critics.”
“One of the things I would say about the film is it’s a dark and dangerous topic, but the film itself is a fun ride,” Gibney told AP.
