Trump backs down on taxpayer-funded ‘patriotic’ ads: ‘I’ll pay for them myself’

President Donald Trump reacted to critics of his taxpayer-funded patriotic ads and revealed how he plans to handle them in the future.

Despite the message of these advertisements being pro-America, some argue that they are no more than pro-Trump propaganda and should not be funded with taxpayer money. Others argue that they look a lot like campaign ads.

These ads, which sport a “Paid for by the US government” stamp at the end, have aired on multiple news stations, including Fox News, MSNOW and CNN.

They also quickly raised potential ethics concerns and Trump finally addressed the controversy in a Monday afternoon Truth Social post where he vowed to pay for them himself using funds from his MAGA Inc. super PAC.

“The Radical Left is upset with the fact that I am taking Ads, which I consider to be a positive promotion for our Great U.S.A., and paying for them with U.S.A. money. This is a rather standard thing to do but, rather than doing that, although nothing will make them happy, I have decided to do the Patriotic Ads, among others, and pay for them myself, and with money I raised for MAGA, Inc. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!” he wrote.

Featuring messages about the deep state, fake news, communism and globalism, they push pro-United States sentiment that has been borrowed from statements the president made on the campaign trail. Nothing said in the videos is particularly groundbreaking, but it has still sparked the ire of lawmakers, including Republicans like Sen. John Kennedy, R-La.

“I was just gonna say, Margaret, I don’t think any public official, including President Trump or Kristi Noem or John Kennedy, should spend public money on private ads for themselves. Now, the White House sees it differently. But I think there ought to be a rule, and there probably is a rule, that you can’t spend public money to promote yourself,” Kennedy said on “Face the Nation.”

“I may end up with a sombrero on my head, but I also think we ought to have a rule that no politician can have a building named after him when he’s alive.”
