Trump blames Fox News for GOP election losses — then calls into the network to confront its coverage

Fault-finding featured President Donald Trump looking beyond the ballot to who he says “bears responsibility for these losses” after an administrative-crippling blue wave.

Midterm trends and troubling favorability ratings heading into Election Night carried with them expectations of a good night for Democrats. After roughly a month of constant campaigning proved insufficient to hold off the worst of the wave, the president continued an ongoing gripe with Fox News after its latest example of featuring a “ranting and raving” leftist on the air.

Late into the live coverage of the results, even before Trump himself phoned in to speak with the anchors, Fox News featured former New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio (D) as part of its panel coverage.

As a result, the president, who had begun tearing into the network hours earlier, further criticized Fox News in a Truth Social post as he wondered, “Why does Fox News have Bill de Blasio, the Worst Mayor in the History of New York City, on air, ranting and raving like a Lunatic? He left the City in disgrace, and the damage he caused was incalculable — It has never been the same, and now he’s telling us how to run America.”

“FoxNews bears responsibility for these losses by constantly and consistently putting on the Dumocrat opposition, and worse,” added Trump. “GOD BLESS AMERICA!”

Earlier in the evening, before it was clear that the House and the Senate, as well as numerous state leadership positions, would be carried by the Democrats, the chief executive had not only sounded off on political commentator Jessica Tarlov’s continued presence on the network, but he also brought up Fox News’ ratings.

“FoxNews Ratings are way down (27%!) because they’re spending too much time covering the Trump Deranged Dumocrats! All of those people who used to watch Fox, and no longer do, get it. It’s them, not me — My numbers are better than they have ever been,” he contended. “The new CNN Poll stated that ‘TRUMP’ is at 99% among Republicans and, among Republican Presidents, ‘TRUMP’ is at 53%, compared to Ronald Reagan at 18%, and Abraham Lincoln at 8%! Fox knows this, and so does everyone else!”

Further calling out Fox Corp. donations to Democrats, Trump went on, “No wonder FoxNews Ratings are collapsing, and they’re going to go down a lot further. They’re way down, not because of me, but because they are AGAINST me! This happened once before, and Fox almost collapsed. It’s happening again!”

More than a week before the election, the president had similarly criticized Fox News as he insisted the network was “spending far too much time putting on the OPPONENTS of Republican Party Candidates, people that love our Country, and have Great Policies and Ideas.”

“These American Patriots are being absolutely ‘blurred out’ by the Media, and Fox is doing little to help,” said Trump. “That’s the only reason this Race is close, if it is indeed close.”

Meanwhile, as part of a stated intent to provide punditry on the election results, the endorsement-wielding head of the Republican Party set his initial sights on the major downballot upset in the Lone Star State, “If Greg Abbott, the Governor of Texas, hadn’t become a RINO in the last six months of his Political Life, he wouldn’t have lost. He went back to his original formula, and it wasn’t pretty!”

As for the remaining years of his administration, understanding that accomplishments would require reaching across the aisle, a call with CBS News found the president offering, “congratulations to the Democrats, and I look forward to working with you for the good of our country.”

Trump reminded that he “wasn’t on the ballot, and there was nothing that could be done about that,” as he reiterated, “If I was, we would have won.”
