Trump celebrates MTG’s resignation while AOC scrutinizes the timing

President Donald Trump gleefully celebrated Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s resignation announcement on Friday.

“I think it’s great news for the country,” he told ABC News correspondent Rachel Scott late Friday. “It’s great.”

Asked if Greene had given him a heads-up about her resignation, he said, “Nah, it doesn’t matter, you know, but I think it’s great. I think she should be happy.”

His attitude somewhat changed when he later posted to Truth Social early Saturday morning, insulting and tearing into the departing congresswoman, as well as a few others:

“Marjorie ‘Traitor’ Brown, because of PLUMMETING Poll Numbers, and not wanting to face a Primary Challenger with a strong Trump Endorsement (where she would have no chance of winning!), has decided to call it ‘quits,'” the president wrote.

“Her relationship with the WORST Republican Congressman in decades, Tom Massie of Kentucky, also known as Rand Paul Jr. because he votes against the Republican Party (and really good legislation!), did not help her. For some reason, primarily that I refused to return her never ending barrage of phone calls, Marjorie went BAD,” he added.

But to his credit, Trump concluded the harsh statement by again wishing Greene well.

“Nevertheless, I will always appreciate Marjorie, and thank her for her service to our Country! President DJT,” he wrote.

Over on the other side of the aisle, Democrat Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez accused Greene of retiring for financial benefit.

“She’s carefully timing her departure just 1-2 days after her pension kicks in and after making millions of dollars insider trading stocks for weapons manufacturers and others while in office,” the congresswoman wrote in an Instagram Story.

“She is saying a lot but her actions have not backed up the rhetoric. For all her talk, she’s still voting with them to gut healthcare and advance self-dealing corruption schemes,” she added.

According to the Daily Mail, Greene’s chosen departure date, Jan. 5, is exactly two days after her lifetime federal pension becomes fully vested.

Pro-Trump activist Laura Loomer also accused Greene of purposefully retiring for financial benefit.

“MTG decided to resign on January 5th, 2026,” she tweeted. “Her federal pension kicks in on January 3, 2026. It’s all about the money for her. Always has been. She’s doing this for the money. Expect to see her portfolio explode between now and January 2026.”

Others pushed back on this criticism by noting that Greene can’t actually collect any of the pension for another 11 years and that even once she starts collecting, it’ll only be $1250 per month.

As it stands, the congresswoman is currently already worth $25 million.

Greene’s resignation announcement was made late Friday in a video and statement published to X.

Citing President Trump’s recent criticisms of her — especially regarding her obsession with deceased pedophile Jeffrey Epstein — Greene announced she’ll be leaving on Jan. 5 of next year.

“Loyalty should be a two way street and we should be able to vote our conscience and represent our district’s interest because our job title is literally, ‘Representative,'” she wrote in her statement.

Her announcement came after weeks of her tussling with Trump and other Republicans over the so-called Epstein files.

This conflict eventually led to Trump withdrawing his support from Greene’s reelection campaign and vowing to primary her.

“I have too much self respect and dignity, love my family too much, and do not want my sweet district to have to endure a hurtful and hateful primary against me by the President we all fought for, only to fight and win my election while Republicans will likely lose the midterms,” Greene wrote in her resignation statement.
