Trump endorses ‘ERIC’ in GOP primary: ‘A truly bizarre ending to the battle of Erics’

Former President Donald Trump triggered some confusion when he announced his “Complete and Total Endorsement” of a U.S. Senate candidate in Missouri.

Trump’s hearty support of “Eric” in a statement on Monday created some perplexing reactions even among the two candidates for Missouri’s GOP Senate primary, both with the same first name, as the August 2 primary date approached.

Former Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens and Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt both celebrated the former president’s endorsement, though it remained unclear who Trump was touting as his choice to send “a MAGA Champion and True Warrior to the U.S. Senate.”

“There is a BIG Election in the Great State of Missouri, and we must send a MAGA Champion and True Warrior to the U.S. Senate, someone who will fight for Border Security, Election Integrity, our Military and Great Veterans, together with having a powerful toughness on Crime and the Border,” Trump wrote via his Save America PAC.

“We need a person who will not back down to the Radical Left Lunatics who are destroying our Country. I trust the Great People of Missouri, on this one, to make up their own minds, much as they did when they gave me landslide victories in the 2016 and 2020 Elections, and I am therefore proud to announce that ERIC has my Complete and Total Endorsement!” Trump concluded.

Kansas City Star politics editor Bryan Lowry noted that this was a “truly bizarre ending to the battle of Erics.”

Greitens leaped at the chance to thank Trump for the endorsement, claiming the support in a tweet, stating, “Honored to have the support of President Trump! We will MAGA!”

The former governor resigned in 2017 amid sexual harassment allegations brought by his ex-wife who claimed he had been abusive to her and the couple’s children.

The other “Eric” in the Missouri race also claimed Trump’s endorsement, tweeting his thanks as well.

“I’m grateful for President Trump’s endorsement. As the only America First candidate who has actually fought for election integrity, border security & against the Left’s indoctrination of our kids—I’ll take that fight to the Senate to SAVE AMERICA!” Schmitt wrote.

Schmitt was leading Greitens in a poll last week conducted by Emerson Polling and The Hill.

Meanwhile, both candidates flooded their Twitter accounts with proof of their America First stances and the support of the former president.

Greitens posted images of himself with Trump as well as touting the endorsement of the former president’s son, Donald Trump Jr.

But Schmitt also shared and retweeted comments showing his Trump bona-fides.

“As the only America First candidate in this race, I have fought for election integrity, fought to secure our borders by pushing back on Biden’s reversal of President’s Trump Remain in Mexico Policy, suing, and winning to ensure Title 42 stays in place and suing to finish,” Schmitt said in a statement, “President Trump’s border wall, and the only candidate who has taken on the Radical Left Lunatics who want to indoctrinate our kids in school. Thank you again, President Trump. We are going to win big and I look forward to restoring the America First agenda with you.”
