Trump floats Ted Cruz for Supreme Court, jokes about why he’s ‘only guy’ who’d get 100% approval in Senate

President Donald Trump joked on Friday that if he put Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, on the Supreme Court, it would get 100% of the vote.

While speaking to a crowd in Corpus Christi, Texas, about American energy, Trump jabbed at Cruz. The president theorizes that nominating the senator to the SCOTUS would earn “100% of the Democrat vote, 100% of the Republican vote” because everyone would be excited to “get him out of there.”

Watch:

“And we have a senator who’s really an amazing guy, and I’m thinking of putting him in the Supreme Court. No no, I’m thinking, because it’s very hard, getting these nominations through is very tough. He’s the only guy I know who can get 100% of the Democrat vote, 100% of the Republican vote, they wanna get him out of there, he is such a pain in the ass but he’s so good and so talented, Ted Cruz,” Trump said to applause.

Cruz, a Harvard Law School graduate, has argued eight cases before the justices of the Supreme Court as solicitor general of Texas. When he returned to his private practice, he argued his ninth case.

“At the time of Cruz’s 2012 Senate run, he had tried the most Supreme Court cases of any practicing lawyer in Texas or any member of Congress, according to The Texas Tribune,” Fox News reported.

While clearly a joke, it’s no secret that Trump would like to have more conservative justices on the Supreme Court. However, Democrats are the ones who most often talk about “packing” the court, whereas the president would simply wait for an opening to present itself before making his nomination.
