First Donald Trump dished on how he “used to get along great” with California Gov. Gavin Newsom, and now he’s singing the praises of former President Bill Clinton. It’s almost as if the nation’s 45th president is trying to expand his appeal to capture disaffected Democrats.
Trump sat down with Fox News host Mark Levin for an interview that aired on Sunday evening and his relationship with the Clintons came up, with a special emphasis on Bill.
“They came to my wedding,” the 2024 Republican presidential candidate said when Levin pointed out that Trump used to get along well with Bill and Hillary Clinton.
Levin asked, “What do you make of that? That’s politics too?”
“That’s politics too. It’s all politics,” Trump replied, adding that Bill loved to golf and played “a lot” at Trump National Golf Club Westchester.
“Is he any good?” Levin asked.
“Better than people think,” Trump said. “He’s got a certain level of athleticism, actually.”
He then recalled playing a round of golf with the nation’s 42nd president and hanging out together in the clubhouse for two-and-a-half hours talking politics, adding that Bill “just loved to talk about enthusiasm.”
Trump told Levin that Hillary’s campaign made a mistake by not using Bill more during the 2016 presidential election.
“I think they did a great disservice by not using him when I went against Hillary. I think that they had this unbelievable weapon known as Bill Clinton, who was a natural politician,” he said, before claiming that Bill told his wife’s campaign that they needed to up their presence in Michigan and Wisconsin because he was seeing Trump signs “all over the place.”
“They said, ‘No, no, no, the polls indicate that he can’t win Wisconsin,’ and I ended up winning Michigan and Wisconsin,” Trump said, adding that Bill told the campaign they were going to lose Wisconsin. “He had an instinct. He had a natural instinct like people do. People that are good at things have a lot of instinct.”
“He was a weapon that they decided not to use,” the former president continued. “They actually did the opposite. They shut him out. They shut him out, and I think that was a mistake.”
Interestingly, Trump would also comment on the similarities between himself and Richard Nixon in regard to their respective impeachments.
“His biggest regret, according to his daughters — and I think according to him, pretty much, was that he didn’t fight. When I got impeached twice by really crooked, disgusting politicians, you know they just happened to have a majority, and the Democrats do stick together,” he said. “We had such great support. Nixon had no support. You know, he just didn’t have support.”
