CNN has lost a big-name talent after issuing an ultimatum over timeslots, meanwhile, they’ve kept on the man who cost the company millions in a recent lawsuit.
It would appear the left-leaning news network is making more problems for itself after Mark Thompson’s attempt to reshuffle timeslots resulted in Jim Acosta’s abrupt exit. On Monday, Oliver Darcy’s Status newsletter revealed the possibility that the anchor may be headed for the door after Thompson tried to take his 10 am slot, bumping Acosta to midnight. This came despite the show actually performing fairly well, sometimes even outshining the primetime programming.
“CNN brass, as we first reported earlier this month, decided to strip Acosta of his 10 am show, which he has anchored to great ratings success over the last 11 months, at times even seeing higher viewership than programs in the channel’s prime time bloc,” the newsletter reported. “Acosta was instead offered the less-than-desirable option of anchoring a show from midnight until 2 am ET. CNN pitched the gig to Acosta as anchoring during prime time on the West Coast and said he could move to Los Angeles to host the program. But the reality is the program would have aired at a time in which cable news viewership is at its lowest levels.”
Critics believe that the sudden interest in moving Acosta may have been to appease President Donald Trump, perhaps in an attempt to boost their falling ratings. Some are just glad he’s gone, as he was too much of a showboat.
“Jim is one of the least-liked and most eye-rolled of all the talent at CNN. And this has been a longstanding status,” an insider revealed, according to the Daily Mail. “He’s insufferable, an egomaniac. If he can make himself part of the story, he will.”
“His jealousy is even visibly thicker than his makeup and hardened hair gel.”
“Everyone knows he’s the guy who constantly sparred with Trump and I imagine that’s not the look that the network is going for right now,” an ex-staffer told the outlet.
Meanwhile, one person not taking the opportunity to jump ship is correspondent Alex Marquardt, who continues to be quite visible on CNN despite being the reason they had to pay out millions to a man they were found to have slandered.
In November 2021, Marquardt implied Navy veteran Zachary Young illegally profited from helping people in Afghanistan flee during the botched withdrawal under the previous administration. Young took the matter to court and was awarded a large sum for his troubles, but reveals that Marquardt never actually apologized.
“We’ve given Mr. Marquardt, you know, plenty of opportunities during deposition and then again at trial to apologize. And, you know, the answer was no,” he said to Fox News Digital. “He still stands behind his work. He’s very proud of what he did. His hit piece on me to destroy my life.”
CNN also continues to stand behind the correspondent.
“Alex is on our air because he is an experienced, veteran reporter with valuable insights on the news,” a spokesperson said to Fox.
