President-elect Donald Trump is wasting no time getting to work for the American people, but that doesn’t mean he’s stopped trolling his haters.
While addressing the House Republican conference Wednesday morning, Trump made a third-term quip that predictably riled up those who see him as a dictator.
“I suspect I won’t be running again unless you say he’s so good we’ve got to figure something else out,” he joked. “The people leaving now in the back of the [room] will write that I said that.”
This is not the first time he has humorously probed the possibility of serving indefinitely, which Democrats predictably used as proof of their belief he is an authoritarian leader.
They are taking it so seriously, in fact, that Rep Dan Goldman (D-NY) even introduced a resolution reaffirming that presidents can only serve two terms. This is already a constitutional limitation specifically enshrined in the 22nd Amendment, so Goldman’s resolution is largely a performative gesture that targets Trump for political brownie points.
On X, the leftist meltdown was immediate:
Trump just dropped a “joke” about running for a third term in 2028.
It bears repeating that the U.S. Constitution does NOT prevent Trump from running again, NOR does it prevent him from serving as President after January 2029.
It prevents him from being ELECTED three times.

TRUMP WASN’T ‘KIDDING’ ABOUT SERVING A 3RD TERM: Forget Gaetz. When Trump told House GOP to think how he could run again, he meant it
IT’S WHY he wants this Hegseth at the Pentagon. He WOULD use the army to shoot protestors

I fully expect Trump to attempt to force his way onto all the state’s ballots in 2028.

Trump ‘jokes’ to House Republicans –

Yeah, he’s ‘joking’. Buckle up folks.— Musycks (@Musycks) November 14, 2024
I have no doubt that MAGA has already begun researching how to get around the 22nd amendment.
