President Donald Trump is putting states and localities in charge of establishing and managing their own disaster response.
Fox News Digital first reported on the details of the order which seeks to “streamline” federal responses to allow local areas to work seamlessly to provide disaster relief to Americans.
“This Order restores state, local, and individual empowerment in disaster preparedness and response, and injects common sense into infrastructure prioritization and strategic investments through risk-informed decisions that make our infrastructure, communities, and economy more resilient to global and dynamic threats and hazards,” order details state, according to Fox.
The order also creates the National Resilience Strategy, which will identify threats to United States national security and outline “priorities, means, and ways to advance the resilience of the nation.”
“Officials will be called to review ‘all infrastructure, continuity, and preparedness and response policies’ to ensure they fall in line with the National Resilience Strategy,” Fox reported.
Ultimately the order will alter the federal government’s “all-hazards” approach to handling disasters to a more “risk-informed approach” which aims to focus on “resilience and action over mere information sharing.”
The move comes after Trump has expressed his displeasure over FEMA’s disaster response. In the days following his inauguration, he spoke to Sean Hannity and alluded to the order, saying “FEMA has not done their job for the last four years” and he wants it so that “states take care of their own problems.”
Americans have become increasingly critical of FEMA following the disastrous response to Hurricanes Helene and Milton. Reports that Trump supporters were being passed over by federal officials as many struggled with losing their homes, businesses and even loved ones did little to help the federal agency’s public image.
Shortly after taking office, Trump signed another executive order creating a review council to “drastically” improve the agency.
“Despite obligating nearly $30 billion in disaster aid each of the past three years, FEMA has managed to leave vulnerable Americans without the resources or support they need when they need it most,” it read. “There are serious concerns of political bias in FEMA. Indeed, at least one former FEMA responder has stated that FEMA managers directed her to avoid homes of individuals supporting the campaign of Donald J. Trump for President.”
