Resilience, gratitude and sorrow were prominent in statements from former President Donald Trump and his children following a tragic assassination attempt.
Those in attendance or watching the livestream of the rally in Butler, Pennsylvania Saturday were left in shock that spread across the nation as word traveled that an attempt had been made on the presumptive 2024 Republican nominee’s life.
Like the former president demonstrated in the immediate aftermath, maintaining composure and embodying the raised-fist message to “Fight!” that he’d delivered to those present, Trump’s initial statement signified leadership as he touched on his own injury only after recognizing the victims and those who’d acted to prevent further tragedy.
“I want to thank The United States Secret Service, and all of Law Enforcement, for their rapid response on the shooting that just took place in Butler, Pennsylvania,” began the president not long after he’d been escorted away. “Most importantly, I want to extend my condolences to the family of the person at the Rally who was killed, and also to the family of another person that was badly injured.”
Before detailing the extent of his own injury, Trump hit on the broader implications and confirmed the threat had been neutralized, “It is incredible that such an act can take place in our Country. Nothing is known at this time about the shooter, who is now dead. I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear. I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin. Much bleeding took place, so I realized then what was happening. GOD BLESS AMERICA!”

Throughout the evening and into the night, as thoughts and prayers were raised for the attendee fatally wounded, those injured and the families of all impacted, the president’s children released statements of their own conveying compassion and strength.
“Thank you for your love and prayers for my father and for the other victims of today’s senseless violence in Butler, Pennsylvania,” wrote Ivanka Trump who remained off the campaign trail for the 2024 cycle. “I am grateful to the Secret Service and all the other law enforcement officers for their quick and decisive actions today. I continue to pray for our country. I love you Dad, today and always.”
In a similar vein, Tiffany Trump expressed, “The outpouring of love and support for my dad is deeply appreciated. Thank you God for keeping my father alive. Political violence is never the answer. God bless the secret service and law enforcement who fearlessly intervened. Please include the families of the victims in your prayers. As you saw today, my father is a fighter and he will continue to fight for you and the USA.”
Leaving a picture to do most of the talking for her, Trump’s daughter-in-law and the co-chair of the Republican National Committee, Lara Trump, shared an depiction of faith representing Jesus Christ looking out for the onetime commander-in-chief with the caption, “Fear not, for I am with you.”

Meanwhile, the GOP’s leaders older son’s, Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump, each matched their father’s intensity seen in the moment of defiance after the assassination attempt with the former contending, “He’ll never stop fighting to Save America,” and the latter stating, “Never Surrender!!”
The president embodied those remarks as he was seen mere hours after the tragedy, stepping off his plane in New Jersey in a video captioned by his deputy director of communications Margo Martin who said, “Strong and resilient. He will never stop fighting for America.”
