Donald Trump announced on Monday that he has filed a lawsuit against journalist Bob Woodward for allegedly including recordings of their various interviews in the audiobook version of the veteran reporter’s 2020 book “Rage” without permission.
Trump was interviewed 19 times by Woodward in 2019 and 2020 and consented to their conversations being recorded for the purpose of a book, but “the former president is arguing the agreement doesn’t cover the inclusion of those audio files in ‘The Trump Tapes,’ an audiobook collection of the recordings published by Simon & Schuster Inc. last year,” The Hill reported.
“I am continuing my fight against the corrupt, dishonest, and deranged Fake News Media by filing this lawsuit against a man whose image is far different from the fact, Bob Woodward, his publisher Simon & Schuster, and their parent company, Paramount Global, for misappropriating, manipulating, and wrongfully profiting from my Voice,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
“Woodward and his corporate bosses not only tried to profiteer from doctoring tapes, which were only to be used for the ‘written word,’ namely help in accuracy for his book,” he added. “This was an open and blatant attempt to make me look as bad as possible. They have instead been exposed for the liars and forgers that they are. I will always champion TRUTH and battle against the evil forces of disinformation and Fake News!”
“This case centers on Mr. Woodward’s systematic usurpation, manipulation, and exploitation of audio of President Trump gathered in connection with a series of interviews conducted by Mr. Woodward,” the lawsuit reads.
“Paramount, [Simon & Schuster] and Woodward proceeded with such publication despite knowing that President Trump had consented to being recorded only for the purposes of ‘the book,’… and never consented to release of any audio recording, inclusive of the Interview Sound Recordings,” the filing continued.
Trump seeks more than $49 million in damages.
Late last year, Trump sued CNN for $475 million in damages for allegedly defaming him.
“Beyond simply highlighting any negative information about the plaintiff and ignoring all positive information about him, CNN has sought to use its massive influence — purportedly as a ‘trusted’ news source — to defame the plaintiff in the minds of its viewers and readers for the purpose of defeating him politically,” the lawsuit stated.
