President Donald J. Trump’s social media account declared “mission accomplished” in Iran, a statement that comes as his administration is tightening the economic screws with the most punishing sanctions ever.
In a Wednesday post to Truth Social featuring the image of a glowering Trump next to an American flag and flanked by military planes and an aircraft carrier, the president took a jab at GOP predecessor George W. Bush and his wars while touting his own perceived success in Iran.
“MISSION NOT ACCOMPLISHED 2001-2021” reads a sign next to Bush on one side of the graphic with a picture of former Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on the other next to a sign reading “MISSION ACCOMPLISHED 2026.”
🔥 WOW! President Trump just dropped this banger and it throws major shade on President Bush

Khamenei was killed in the early stages of the war, a joint project of Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, but despite his being sent to Allah by the precision airstrike on his Tehran compound, the regime has remained stubbornly in power, with its ability to produce a nuclear weapon still in question. The Strait of Hormuz also remains closed.
The post comes as the war nears its six-month mark and seemed to contradict himself after Trump told Al Jazeera that the war will “continue for as long as necessary,” according to CBS News.
Bush infamously invited mockery when he spoke on board the USS Abraham Lincoln on May 1, 2003, in front of a “Mission Accomplished” banner in the early stages of the quagmire in Iraq that would define his legacy.
Ironically, the USS Abraham Lincoln has made headlines as a symbol of the dragging on of the Iran war, with reports of abysmal conditions onboard and suicide attempts by at least one crew member.
X users jumped on the post as well as Trump’s taking a shot at his predecessor over the other Middle East war.
Oof.
I would stay away from any parallels to W in this situation, personally. https://t.co/6B7sSaYmKf

Trump doesn’t seem to realize that “Mission Accomplished” became a punchline after George W. Bush gave a speech aboard an aircraft carrier with that banner as a backdrop in 2003. Unless Trump’s goal was to have Iran close the Strait of Hormuz, it’s hard to imagine what “mission”… pic.twitter.com/Ne5C5XDyIi

This is the white flag of surrender by trump.
He’s not even trying anymore. He’s now simply declaring to his MAGA base “mission accomplished” in Iran. https://t.co/mQSb5Gi4Ps

It’s too perfect. He literally doesn’t know Bush’s “mission accomplished” was ridiculed for two decades now, because the mission was not in fact accomplished. https://t.co/DHKmT8BDnm

After Bush’s speech, the conflict in Iraq went on for another eight years, with his other war in Afghanistan becoming the longest in U.S. history that only ended when disgraced former President Joe Biden cut and ran in August 2021, surrendering the country to the Taliban.
Someone might want to get the message to the president’s social media team that comparisons to Dubya might not be the best idea.
