UK police hit with stinging crowd-sourced fact check over a ‘man and woman’ being sentenced

Muted replies couldn’t keep Community Notes from eviscerating a United Kingdom police force’s claim about the sentence of a gender confused man connected to the sexual abuse of a child in one short phrase.

“Nothing says we know we’re in the wrong like turning the comments off @gmpolice.”

Friday, the Greater Manchester Police issued a release detailing the sentence of Jonathan Walker of Pontsticill, Merthyr Tydfil and Nathan O’Brien of Ashton-under-Lyne as it pertained to the sexual abuse of a four-year-old boy. Only, the GMP saw fit to respect “the gender identity of pedophiles” and detailed the combined sentence of nearly 17 years was doled out to “A man and a woman…”

“#JAILED | A man and a woman have been sentenced to a combined 16 years and 9 months in prison for their roles in the sexual abuse of a child,” stated the post with a mugshot of the “woman” with the explanation, “Naomi O’Brien, of Ashton-under-Lyne, received a total of 4 years and 3 months in prison.”

Attaining nearly 3 million views at the time of this post for the dubious details, Community Notes issued a scathing and succinct rebuke of the GMP that read, “No women were involved in this crime. The perpetrators were both male. Naomi’s first name is Nathan, and he was born male, but identifies as trans. He claimed a trans identity in 2013.”

The note linked to a Daily Mail report detailing how at 23 O’Brien had modeled under the name Morgan Naomi Clarke with the hopes of becoming the winner of the first Miss Transgender UK and “Although Morgan identifies as a woman she does not want a full sex change. However she is saving up to pay for a breast augmentation, chin reshaping surgery and a hair transplant to feminise her appearance.”

Meanwhile, the release from police stated, “O’Brien pleaded guilty to three counts of intentionally encouraging and assisting another to commit a sexual assault against a child, two counts of intentionally encouraging and assisting another to engage in sexual activity in the presence of a child and engaging in sexual activity in the presence of a child.”

It also noted investigators found communications between the parties that indicated “a sexual interest in children” and that “O’Brien incited Walker to sexually abuse the victim on multiple occasions in March 2023.”

Reposted more than 2,300 times, a litany of comments were directed at lauding Community Notes for the “undefeated” record in combating nonsense or slamming the police for indulging in the deviancy of a convicted sex offender.

Outspoken athlete turned activist Riley Gaines remarked, “Thank God for community notes, although no one believed for a second this was a woman. They should be imprisoned for life at the very least. Sickening.”

“Dear Greater Manchester Police. Stop this nonsense. This is a man. How dare you refer to him as a female,” detailed another with a link on where to file complaints about the police as someone else asserted, “One of the best things about community notes is that they are immune to accounts that block or limit replies. You want to spread disinformation on Twitter, go for it but you will be checked honestly and openly.”
