US postal service suspends packages from China and Hong Kong after Trump’s order

The United States Postal Service has announced new restrictions on deliveries from China and Hong Kong, following actions from President Donald Trump.

The USPS announced that it won’t be delivering any packages from China and Hong Kong, but will still be delivering letters and “flats” which are items up to 15 inches long and 3/4 of an inch thick. The temporary suspension officially went into effect on Tuesday, but no official reason was given for it.

This sudden move follows Trump’s announcement of a 10% tariff on Chinese imports, as well as ending the “de minimis” exemption which allowed Americans to avoid paying additional taxes on purchases under $1000.

Online shopping sites offering deep discounts, like Shein and Temu, are most likely to be impacted by these changes as they ship from China. These sites are popular with US citizens for their low prices and a wide array of products, offering a cheap shopping experience.

Ultra Information Solution founder Ram Ben Tzion reacted to the news, saying “This is huge… People waiting for orders from Amazon, Shein, and Temu have no way of knowing when they can receive those orders.”

A congressional report released in June 2023 indicates that Shein and Temu alone account for approximately 30% of all packages shipped to America per day and the US Customs and Border Protection has said that it handles over four million “de minimis” imports a week, meaning the impact of this suspension will be immediate and widely felt.

However other international shipping companies, such as FedEx, will continue to handle packages being sent to the US, which could help ease the burden and result in a boon for private shipping.
