US town offering a $20,000 package to move there. Here are the requirements

In today’s economy when Americans all over are hurting for cash, one Maryland town has put together a very enticing offer.

A new program is offering a $20,000 package to those moving to Cumberland, Maryland, a town of 18,769 residents as of 2022. This is reportedly down 12% from 2020, and likely a large part of the reason they are paying those who wish to relocate to the area.

“The package, offering up to $20,000, is comprised of $10,000 in relocation cash, PLUS up to $10,000, dollar-for-dollar match, for approved renovations on an existing home, OR for a down payment on a newly constructed home within City limits,” read the town’s official website. “Cumberland’s history is built around a location in close proximity to Pittsburgh, D.C., and Baltimore.”

“With 95% broadband connectivity, plus interstate highway and rail access, 19,000 Cumberland residents can choose their own lifestyle. The downtown is retooled for modern use,” the site adds.

For those who love water, the town was built along the Potomac River; and for those who love living near, but not in, big cities, it’s approximately two hours from Baltimore. Love outdoor activities instead? Allegany County is made up of a massive 70,000 acres where adventure awaits.

“Cumberland has a strong and growing sense of place, big enough to provide services and infrastructure, small enough that everyone matters.”

The town also boasts itself as a tourist destination, pulling in a quarter of a million travelers a year.

“Public investment created for this industry provides upgraded entertainment and cultural options unique in a Mid-Atlantic small-town setting,” they claim.

But what is the catch? A deal this good doesn’t come for free, and those who are interested must meet certain requirements.

  • Applicants must be at least 18 years old
  • Must be eligible to work full-time in the United States
  • Must have existing local employment, proof of self-employment, or be in the process of accepting a local job

  • If a recently built home is purchased, the value must be $150,000 or more
